First casting has a lot to do with catching or not catching. How the dry fly lands on the water.
2. Look around if there is a lot of green grass etc use something green, brown use brown.
If the trout are deeper try a prince nymph or some type of nymph.
I’ve been fly fishing for 50 years and some days stand next to someone that’s using the same thing and I catch 10 to 1.
Practice and patience is what fly fishing is all about.
Always always always visit the local fly shop and get some honest info of what’s going on in the area.

Good luck but have fun first

I've found that other anglers when I mention that I have an ugly stik crap on me for it. It's serviced me well through the years and I have put it through hell and back, and I have yet to have a complaint.

I had a charter boat and finally after customers broke several expensive rods etc. I purchased ugly sticks and life was good. I won’t say they are the best but unbreakable not expensive and did perfect for Salmon etc on a charter boat. I have no problem with them

I just use my fish finder to see where they are. I don’t know if any accurate chart because of current, speed, weight of down rigger ball etc. salt water and fresh water makes a difference also.

Your finder should be able to see them

Obviously being a charter boat captain if we showed up at a dock and our fish keep shrinking it would be a problem.

If you keep a fish wet on ice it should not shrink. Studies do show fish shrink but again these were done without measuring then placing back into water.

I was told by experts in the field that if you catch a 15 inch fish keep it wet it shouldn’t shrink.

If they are deeper you try nymph fishing.

If you tell them you caught them in Florida you better have a Florida license. However if you bring them back into Georgia you better a ha Georgia license and the fish need to be of legal size. You must obey Possession limits also.

Look for colder water. Streams hold a lot of trout. Look up fishing reports in your area and see where people are catching trout.

I don’t think overpopulation is the answer. With bass if you are catching 8” fish in one area your probably going to Catch a lot of 8” in the same spot. You need to try other areas when you can, get your grandson on some fish then go try a different area for awhile. Eventually you will find a big one.

The thing is A large bass will eat a smaller bass so where the 8” fish are they feel safe. They will not be to close to a 5 lb fish.

Simple strap the biggest guy on the roof inside a rolled up carpet. May have to drug him the night before. Plenty of room inside

It’s hard to give instructions over the internet. I’ve been fly fishing for 50 years and have taught many to do it. Rivers are fine. Go by a fly shop and ask for some instructions. Most of the time they are happy to help out a new fly fisherman
Good luck. I fished the Provo a lot right there in Heber. Great place to fish.

Use mono or fluorocarbon leader. You don’t want fish to see the line hooked to your bait. The leader only needs to be 10ft long. Use an Albright knot or similar to tie leader to braid
