How do you transport your rods and reels in the car?

5.5 hour drive coming up and I am bringing 4 rods and reels with me. I used to just use velcro straps and gently place them on top of my other crap, but we've got 3 guys and all their gear in the car this time and I'm starting to get up there in investment of my gear. I don't want to break a $150 reel or $50 rod needlessly. I also don't want to spend $100 on a travelling case. What do you all use to protect your gear?

Can you find a way to strap them or “hang” them on the ceiling of the car? I’ve seen people use curtain rods or rope to tie the coat hangers or handles that are on the ceiling together and you can rest the rods on the rope that spans them. You can Velcro them to the strap as well so they don’t shift.

Hmm, I thought of that, but we are three tall guys 6'2", 6'5" and 6'7" so going up doesn't help too much haha cause we'll be in the way. But, I might try that if all else fails.

Just google and make a diy rod tube. Easy and cheap.

I did, but sometimes seeing it on a DIY video or page vs people who actually use them is different. I've DIY'd a lot of stuff and then junked it because it didn't work out as expected.

I'd recommend investing in a few two piece rods, for traveling at the very least. This is what I used growing up and they are just fine for catching fish. Wasn't until recently where I really started using single body rods and this is because I have a boat now so I never have to collapse them. Just move from garage to rod holders as necessery lol. Good luck on the fishing trip!

Also, if you don't already use them, I'd say get used to using barrel swivels and snap swivels for your rigs. Could make for easy detaching and removing of your pricier reels. I've never taken reels off for travel, but I never had expensive reels until I had my own boat ha. Had I been using $100+ reels I probably would have let them travel in my luggage to not get rattled around too much.

Muskie fishing, so I'll have one piece rods. But yeah I've got two 2- piece rods for my smaller rigs. I use leaders on my muskie rigs, so I'm good there. Removing the reels isn't out of the questions. Palomar knots are easy and fast to do, so it only takes a couple minutes to retie them.

I gotcha, I'd like to go fish some Musky some time, never had the opportunity but seems like a fun fish to haul in. Yea if you are that worried about it though, taking reels off is super easy and really not that time consuming. Whoever is in the car with you should understand you're going fishing, rods may need to be buckled in and they do take precedence HA!

Plus some foam to hold them in place. Don’t want a broken rod tip cuz you hit a bump. Happened to me, luckily cheap rod.

I was thinking a PVC pipe and a pool noodle cut open and putting them inside the noodle then inside the PVC pipe.
