I live in Utah. I tried the first time and my line ended up really messed up had to cut it off and put a new fly on. I tried it on a river and I really sucked! Looking for some instruction and thinking I should probably start with lake fishing to get used to it.

It’s hard to give instructions over the internet. I’ve been fly fishing for 50 years and have taught many to do it. Rivers are fine. Go by a fly shop and ask for some instructions. Most of the time they are happy to help out a new fly fisherman
Good luck. I fished the Provo a lot right there in Heber. Great place to fish.

There are tons of videos on you tube, I've been a certified IFFF for 20 years...The Golden Rule.."The fly and the line go in the direction that you accelerate and stop the tip" if you completely follow that statement, it effects every part of your cast.your leaders a mess for many reasons, you must move rod tip in straight line, not in an arc, like rolling paint on a ceiling. my mantra "Take up flycasting and all your problems will be behind you" it goes to hell on your backcast,so watch your backcast... my instructor is Tim Rajeff, worlds champion, and HE watches his backcast!! Good Luck

If you have access to “you tube” there are several persons showing beginning fly fishing on there.

Here is a link for practicing at home and out on the lawn:

And this one by Chris Meyers demonstrating the mechanics of the cast.

Also, Chris Meyers demonstrating the roll cast which is often necessary on small streams or where you don't have room for a back cast.

You could bookmark the videos on your phone and be able to review them when at the river, lake or pond.

These are excellent videos, straight tip travel path, no wrist, and a short and abrupt dead stop, that's all folks!!
