Don’t forget the old adage - Only eat shellfish in months spelled with an R. In other words, all months except May, June, July, and August.

The old rule of thumb for the macks returning to Maine waters is when the lilacs bloom, start looking for the macks.

Hondas are every bit as good as Toyotas, but more reasonably priced. The hidden truth regarding hybrids is that the hybrid battery will eventually need replacing, and that is wicked expensive. Another hidden truth about those batteries and EVs is that the elements needed to produce them require massive mining, millions of tons of waste, and in the case of some of those elements, given their source, child labor with no real laws concerning their safety. They are not the earth saving panacea they are being touted as.

Fishing out of Galilee RI with brothers and nephew. Nephew is a commercial fisherman in those waters. He mentions how sometimes he sees subs on the surface headed to or from Groton because of how shallow these waters are. Twenty minutes later we watched a sub on the surface headed for home.

My youngest brother and I have enjoyed Richard Gene the Fishing Machine. Informative and entertaining. The Red Skelton of fishing. When we were kids, my Dad and brothers and I watched Gadabout Gaddis on either Saturday or Sunday afternoons, I think right after Wide World of Sports.

Took bagpipe lessons for 2-1/2 years maybe 15 or so years ago. The first year is just doing practice exercises, getting to know the instrument, learning the fingering to the point of not having to work at it, and in the case of a lung-powered instrument, developing your breathing. Then comes learning tunes, actual music. Having that first year’s foundation paid off, because once you start playing recognisable songs, it comes fast. By the end of 2-1/2 years all in, my repertoire I could play without reading sheet music was close to 2 dozen pieces. Good luck, buddy. You will find it maybe not so easy at first, but richly rewarding and very satisfying.

I tie squid imitations for fluke fishing, and baby squid sabiki rig (aka mackerel tree) for macks. (See my icon.). I have tied a number of crappie jigs that are supposed to be the bees knees for crappie, waiting to give them a go - can’t wait.

Was trolling for landlocked salmon with a salmon streamer, about the size of my pinkie, on East Grand Lake in Maine. It was taken by a bass the size of my index finger.

Buy a small roll of foil faced bubble wrap insulation. Unroll enough to stand on, and wearing your ice fishing socks, stand on it, trace your feet with a sharpie, cut them out with scissors, and now you have insulated inner soles for your boots. The bubbles give insulation and extra cushioning, and the foil reflects your body heat back to you.

I was fluke fishing out of Galilee, RI, with brothers and a nephew in the nephew’s boat. He was acting as both captain and mate. We brothers fished, Adam drove the boat and netted our catches. I was fishing with a squid fly that I had tied, using a spinning rod and reel. I set the hook in a fluke, brought it to the boat, and Adam, in trying to net it, instead broke it off. My fluke, and my fly, were gone. Right away my brother next to me had one on. He reeled it in, got it to the boat, Adam netted it, and there was my squid fly in its lip. My brother got the fluke, I got my fly back. True story. Pretty cool.

My brothers and I have always harvested bluefish cheeks along with the fillets. Five of us filling the cooler with fish, 2 cheeks per fish, gave us enough to make a small pile of cheeks. These would be batter dipped and deep fried for a fish and chips appetizer.
