Partly due to my love for the instrument and the music it makes, and also partly because I wanted to prove 'an old dog can learn new tricks' on February 3rd, I bought a banjo. I have had one lesson, and practice every day 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Are there any banjo players in the group? If so, how long did it take before you could play a recognizable song? Do you still play, and if so, is it country/western, or classical, or what? Just Sayin....RJS

That’s sounds good mr samples. I don’t have that talent . But reminds of a boy friend my late sister met a ft. Devens Massachusetts. He was in the army and from Oklahoma he played the banjo so good he entertained us for awhile. I asked him to play the music from the Beverly hillbillies , and was great . Good luck mr . Samples

I am afraid that the music played in Deliverance is far over my head as a rank beginner. I just hope that someday I can attempt that song! I have often said that if I could play the banjo well enough, I would go on the road..Tell stories and play the banjo! Ha, a dream! Just Sayin...RJS

RJ, My dad played Banjo, classic not 5 string. Worked his way through college in a band and custodian for 3 churches in the 30s. Lead us kids and some neighbors in a band in the 50s -80s. He never stopped learning. Trying to do things on 4 strings the 5 string guys did.

Been an acoustic guitar player for fifty years, still can’t play classical gas. Picked up a banjo 4 years ago from my BIL. I don’t read music so I play by ear. I can play the intro to “dueling banjos “ but not anymore of it. I play mostly the background stuff in country songs. I don’t use pics I play three finger style. If you can read music and keep a good practice routine you should have your first song down in weeks.

I would encourage you to keep at it and soak in the personal fulfillment that comes from doing any hobby at all...especially when it comes to music.

My father plays one and is quite good at it in terms of his own satisfaction. Bluegrass and gospel are his favorites.

I wish you all the best, and playing "by ear" can be plenty of fun and you get immediate results!

I have a banjo a fiddle and a couple guitars I play a little bit on each. My wife plays panino for the church. Back in our younger days I would play the fiddle and she would play the keyboard at nursing homes and at church.

Well Thank Goodness you didn't choose the Drums to learn. The whole neighborhood would be up in arms. And thatreminds of a song by the WHO...."Mama's Got a Squeeze Box and Daddy Never Sleeps at Night".

Go get'em RJS!

At age 84 I decided to learn to play the ukulele. I now own 8, including bass, tenor,
soprano, and concert models. I can't read music but have a good ear.

Thanks to U Tube, I was able to play tunes and accompany U Tube videos in a few
months. I keep a uke by my easy chair and play every day, mainly during TV ads.

Thanks, U Tube!

Steve Martin plays well. Practice will get you where you want to go if your fingers will let you. Don't let the music inside you die, share it with others. Good luck, you will persevere.
