Good Morning!

I am looking for recommendations regarding electronic speed controls for my kicker motor. I have a Honda 8 hp that I use for trolling in my 18’ Weldcraft.

Do any of you use an after-market electronic speed controller?

I have been looking at ones by iTroll and by TrollMaster. Hoping some of our members have experience and suggestions.

Thanks!

What's your game with fish? Do you take only enough to eat fresh or do you load the ice chest and pack the freezer? Me, I only take what we can eat while it's fresh, I never freeze fish....it's just not the same to me

We eat fish fresh whenever we can.
Don’t shy away from vac sealing , especially when we go to the coast to salmon fish. We freeze as much as we can so we have some to bring back to Montana for family and friends.

Thanks Everyone!
Celebrated 68 years this past 10/19.
As one 7 year old student reminded me before I retired from being an elementary school principal,
“You’re not old till you run out of birthdays!”
Glad I’m not old…😉

I have been blessed to celebrate the last 44 with my one and only. She usually out-fishes me when we head to Oregon to salmon fish, but that’s ok with me… I love how excited she gets when she hooks into a big Chinook.

Thanks all for letting me join the ranks of thankful fishermen & women everywhere!

Blessings in abundance to all of you!

Started at 3 with Dad, I’m 68 now, so 65 years a fisherman. Thanks Dad!

Thanks for the nudge down memory lane to some of those early days!

My favorite was sitting between Dad’s legs in a one-man life raft, holding the pole while he paddled us around some remote mountain lakes in the Sierra Nevada mountains. We were both pretty wet and slimy by the end of the day with 20 Brook trout in the tiny boat with us!
We had so many great days together…

Wow!
Thanks for the info!
I was not aware that this could be a problem with electric charging stations.

My only experience with Costa sunglasses has not been great.
My sons bought me a pair of metal frame aviator style glasses. Three different times the right lens fell out of the frames and had to be replaced. They charge $80 to replace the lens under their “limited lifetime warranty”
Each time I told them that the frames were inadequate to hold the lens they were putting in the frames. They said that I was the problem for not tightening the screws often enough, and not putting “Loctite” on the screws even though doing so voids the warranty as stated in the paper work I kept on the glasses.

IMO, costa has a name, but they are terribly overpriced and lack any kind of customer service.

I wish you well in the choosing and in the support you find from the company you go with.

I have only broken one flyrod… rolled a window up on it and snapped 6” off the 9’ 8wt. Of course it was brand new and at the start of an Oregon Steelhead trip.

Sorry that has happened to you.
How have the 3 breaks happened?

That was exactly where I started!
I thought it was a “over weight” problem, but that didn’t check out either.
I don’t understand the physics yet, but it has been my experience, and the online research sent me in that direction.
I have a 2017 Honda 90 electronic fuel injection and no carb adjustment that I can make.

On Yellowstone, I cannot get on plane with a 19 pitch. Maybe air pressure and how low the boat sits in the water as a result…?
Whatever the reason, I plow the water at 9mph.
Change the prop to a 15 pitch and I can get on plane.

I’ll try and find the link to the “altitude-pitch chart” I came across, and post it.

Thanks for the reply and the great explanation. Well written.

We camped at Plover Point(a boat in camp) a couple of years ago. Fished along the southern two arms of the lake. Beautiful!

All boats launching had to be inspected before launching ( for invasive species).

Trolling 30’- 50’ with silver and gold wobble type lures that have black and or red spots got us into lake trout and cutthroats.
We also had cuts rising to caddis early am and at twilight.

All cutthroats have to be released unharmed. ALL Lake Trout MUST be killed (whether you eat them or not)

Hope you have a sea worthy vessel as the lake can go from glass to 4’ - 5’ swells in a hurry. If it starts to blow, get to shelter. The lake is very cold and hypothermia/ drowning is a very real danger if you swamp.

It is an amazing lake to fish.

Make sure your propeller is appropriate for the almost 8,000’ elevation.
First time I fished there, I couldn’t get over 9 mph with a 19 pitch prop. At sea level, I get 38 mph with the same prop.

Send pictures!
Hope you get em!

I’m not seeing any evidence of the two dorsal fins that I’d expect to see if it is a striped. Big scales though…
Hope you catch one so you can share a positive ID with us tomorrow!

I would check where that hose connects to the motor itself and make sure it is not blocked there. then I would contact a dealer or get on YouTube and see if you can find some good information on there. Good luck man keep us posted what you find might help someone else down the road

Update on the motor:

Found a great video on cooling system repair and maintenance. Gave me confidence to dig in. Great video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wr18cuyq2M&t=51s

I was able to check small connector hoses and found on completely plugged. Used the video suggestion of using an old guitar string to ream out the small port and then used my compressor to blow out the rest. It opened up the water flow!
I hooked up the hose to the flush port connector, and for the first time it actually started working. I let it run for 2 hours. Hope it will continue to improve the water flow and I can keep the salt out of the small ports!

Thanks for the suggestions - it lead to the solution!

Randy
