A buddy and I are going to troll Yellowstone Lake for the first time. We are aware of their regulation and rules like barbless hooks, but any tips? Hate to get skunked on his birthday lol. Maybe any rigs or certain areas to give a try?

If you get bored there. I have hooked a bunch of big trout in the upper snake at East Table Creek Campground area.
As well as the Hoback near Hoback Junction. No boat needed just bank fishing. Alpine Wyoming is neat too. I use to go there yearly to all those places. I caught fish further up in the park on bank in river. Jenny Lake is really neat by Tetons. Lizard Creek area is super cool too.

I caught fish shore fishing at Gull point using a Spin-a- lure(bought at the Yellowstone Lake hotel gift store. It is the favorite lure for this lake for the cutthroats. It looks like a super duper but thicker with red spots on a brass background. The fish would only bite when wind/breeze creates a wind ripple. When the water was placid no bites. If you want to catch the invasive Lakers you will to troll deep(downriggers) or vertical jigging if you find a school. Good luck.

We camped at Plover Point(a boat in camp) a couple of years ago. Fished along the southern two arms of the lake. Beautiful!

All boats launching had to be inspected before launching ( for invasive species).

Trolling 30’- 50’ with silver and gold wobble type lures that have black and or red spots got us into lake trout and cutthroats.
We also had cuts rising to caddis early am and at twilight.

All cutthroats have to be released unharmed. ALL Lake Trout MUST be killed (whether you eat them or not)

Hope you have a sea worthy vessel as the lake can go from glass to 4’ - 5’ swells in a hurry. If it starts to blow, get to shelter. The lake is very cold and hypothermia/ drowning is a very real danger if you swamp.

It is an amazing lake to fish.

Make sure your propeller is appropriate for the almost 8,000’ elevation.
First time I fished there, I couldn’t get over 9 mph with a 19 pitch prop. At sea level, I get 38 mph with the same prop.

Send pictures!
Hope you get em!

Hey ReelT... love to hear how/why you think altitude and prop efficiency are correlated.
Proper carburetor or injection setting, certainly suspect, specifically if you have rpm reduction.... but pitch of prop ?

Rudimentary physics makes that assumption rather ludicrous.

Water is water....at sea level or 8000' above.("a pint's a pound, the world around"....!)
Volume of water being thrust by a prop's particular diameter and pitch varies only with rpm's and draft depth of said prop.

Unless you couldn't get the same rpm's at 8000' that you achieved at sea level, a sure sign of gas/O2 imbalance...a "motor tuning prob", blaming the prop is not evaluating your 75%+ speed reduction with any objectivity.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and rationale.

That was exactly where I started!
I thought it was a “over weight” problem, but that didn’t check out either.
I don’t understand the physics yet, but it has been my experience, and the online research sent me in that direction.
I have a 2017 Honda 90 electronic fuel injection and no carb adjustment that I can make.

On Yellowstone, I cannot get on plane with a 19 pitch. Maybe air pressure and how low the boat sits in the water as a result…?
Whatever the reason, I plow the water at 9mph.
Change the prop to a 15 pitch and I can get on plane.

I’ll try and find the link to the “altitude-pitch chart” I came across, and post it.

Thanks for the reply and the great explanation. Well written.

Thanks ReelIt. We will make sure to keep that in mind. I have heard good things about the Southern Arms. I think our boat will be fine. We were trying to find distances and paths to follow. We heard that a certain part is good just to throw a jig out there for Lake Trout. We are also adapting to some of their regulations like no lead, barbs, and only one pole a person. But I appreciate your response.
