I've only been to the Welty Gate (see map below). Welty crosses Hwy 132.

Drifted cut anchovies on the bottom just below the gate -- caught one striper and one cat the only time I've been this year. Done well there almost every time I've been there.

Pretty nice of you to share your exact spot Papa!

Hi everyone. William, here. Early next week I will be fishing lake Mcswain. I was wondering what bait the trout are biting on? I am there will still be plenty of trout left from the derby this weekend. Thank you for your time and help.

If fishing from the bank most guys catch them on Powerbait.

We are in Sonora, CA for the week and we are looking for spots near by. We’d love to to go out for crawdads as well. Not fly fishing and no boat. New Mellones? Don Pedro? I’m thinking Pinecrest may still have snow and the pass may be closed.

Thank you!

New Melones would be a good option for bank fishing.

Hello all. I am new to the forum and my user name is stormranch.
I am from Watsonville California and have arrived at Lake McSwain for a week of fishing.
We typically troll for trout with flashers and a bait tipped lure such as a needle fish. We like to use lead core line. Have never fished this lake before and are looking to learn good techniques and hot spots for this lake. BTW am also trying out my Garmin Stryker 4 for the first time.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you! 😊

Welcome Stormranch! Lead core line is okay just watch for the shallow water. A lot of the lake is around 20 feet and the deepest parts around 50. Flashers with a lure at the end or night crawler have both worked for me. Stay towards the middle trolling between the dam and up past the bathroom. I've heard the fishing has been slow this year. If you are there a whole week you can always go up seven miles and check out McClure, a much larger and deeper lake. Good luck!

Any thoughts/suggestions on the best time of day, as well as location, for fly fishing in this area? We will be there in one week.

Are they even open yet up there yet? I did hear that the snow plows finally made it to the top of Sonora Pass. Pretty much anywhere around the resort and upstream is good fishing. Early morning and late afternoon is when I've had the best luck but have also caught fish any time of the day. Good luck the water will be running fast!

Wow, is that lake back to normal pool?

Don Pedro and McClure are both right about 100% for this time of year historically. The others like Lake Shasta and Oroville have a ways to go. The snow pack in April will be telling of how much run-off we will have into the summer.

Wife has been wanting a catfish dinner so change it up today and target catfish. Cold but caught a couple each about 4 lbs just right for eating. Chicken breast with garlic. Old friend came by.

Hey Ranger, what part of McClure are you fishing? Will be heading that way tomorrow, was thinking about targeting trout at McSwain but after seeing those nice cats I might change my mind. Good job!

Got the boat out Monday on New Melones lake.
Had a great day and the Bass wanted to play!!
Ranger632 couldn't make it but my buddy Steve could and he was red hot !! Ended up the day with5 limits of Bass ( all Kentucky Spots) and I caught 3 limits. ALL CATCH AND RELEASE.
I set Steve up with a small Under Spin with a 3inch Shade minnow and he hooked up on his 1st cast !!
I was using the Ned rig and also hooked up an the 1st cast but lost him right at the boat!! And he was not little I cried 😒 I would say he was 5lbs plus !! I lowered the rod tip down I guess when I reached for the net and using the Ned rig set that is a no no!!
And at the time my buddy was fight a fish , next time I'll have the net closer.!!
Caught two more on the Nid rig and then went cold while my buddy was catching the heck out out of the Bass ever place we went to he had 3limits to my 3 Bass. Finally which over to the Under Spin but a larger size with 4inch Shad minnow and almost caught up to him 😳.
At the end of the day I think I caught 3limits.
Are two largest fish of the day one 3lbs and one 2lbs. All the other Bass in the 1 1/2 lbs range.
The best part of the day was this was my buddy second time really fishing I'm teaching him how to Bass fish 🎣 🐟 πŸ˜„
Felt good watching him catching fish and out fishing me love watching people catch fish out of my boat.!!
Now for the bad news I left my cell phone in my truck and so did my buddy Steve !!
Sorry 😞 it was a day to rember!!
Hope you all have good days like that this year and take a friend or kid fishing 🎣.
Good luck to all of you this year and safe trips
Andy

Welcome to the stage Rob. Lake McSwain plants trout all year long and water levels stay pretty consistent. Lake Amador also stocks a lot of fish and is better for trout now rather than later in the spring and summer as the lake is small and the water heats up fast. Don Pedro, New Melones, Modesto Reservoir, Camanche, and Hogan all plant trout as well. Good Luck!

Just want to say from the wife and I thank you for the Prayers and thoughts for our son on the fire πŸ”₯.
His unit is coming home to day.
So thanks again and God bless all of you!!
Was supposed to have gone fishing to day with Ranger but a fire started up by his Daughters house yesterday afternoon in Sonora and I heard a fire started by New Melones lake.
So I hope his Daughter's house will be OK I'll be praying for her.
Thank you all again
Andy

Glad to hear he's coming home Andy. I heard 108 was closed and the whole town of Sonora was on evacuation warnings. The only plus right now is they're getting some containment on the Dixie fire after burning 750,000 acres but the Caldor fire is getting worse for sure. Good luck to your son and thank you to all the firefighters!
