I use the ball of my index finger to hold the braid when I cast and just straighten my finger when casting. Now IF I was to use the joint just below the ball of the finger, yes it hurts. But when I just use the ball of the index finger there is no pain. Maybe I have just been lucky for 8 years of using Braid instead of Mono.
BALL of the INDEX finger is the key. Also gives better control, range, and accuracy.

One day the braid will cut into your finger and you will learn very quickly that your casting finger needs protection..
