My favorite species has to be jumbo yellow perch. The world record is only about three pounds so I don’t need big gear. Lol

Based on my experience I would go with Smallmouth Bass. They are pure fun to catch!

Well, I prefer a fish that jumps, Tarpon, Marlin, Sails, but the best eating fish are seldom in that class, so it presents a quantry. Food or Fun? So, I guess I'll stick to fishing for fun, and eat fish in a restaurant. Just Sayin...RJS

In my area I find large mouth more of a challenge but the small mouth are, definitely, the better fighters. We don’t have big bass of either species though. A good small mouth here is 4 pounds and the biggest largemouth I’ve ever, personally, caught was around two pounds. Still fun though. Salmon and steelhead are our focal species but they’re both, rather easy to catch. Big trout basically.

Black Sea Bass are the best tasting IMOA. Love catching them all but for food this is the best one.

Very true Robert. The jumbo perch are excellent table fare but there’s also the world record initiative to take into consideration where I live. White sturgeon are fun but once you’ve landed a big one the thrill is kind of over. Then the thrill is taking others to hang one of those monsters.
