So where I live I really just have largemouth, pickerel, sunfish, white perch and yellow perch. Is it worth getting into fly fishing for these fish?

A great way to start. I'm a life long fisherman who got interested in Fly fishing catching largemouth bass and bluegills on dry flies ( just wound a hackle on a hook ) that I tied at age 10. To this day those memories are still strong. Since there is no 12 step program for fly fishing 50 years later I'm hopeless.

I spend time on some fast flowing rivers, and some choppy lakes. I always get a bit woozy at first, but I adjust and relax and it usually dissapears. I also make sure to watch where we’re going and keep looking at the shore. Then I can enjoy the night. I’ve also done some night fishing in some choppy water and been just fine(beer probably helped).

But tomorrow I’m going on my first offshore trip, maybe 20 miles outside in San Diego. I believe it’s suppose to be 5 foot chops that last around 10 seconds. Guy I’m going with said that’s not too rough, but still recommend I take some medicine. But most of the medicine can make vision blurry, which also doesn’t sound like fun, and I’m visiting with a rental car, and my wife refuses to drive in a city this large. I’m also not one who vomits much. I may have vomited 2 times in the last 3-5 years, usually while I have a fever.

So how bad is sea sickness? Anyone else suffer from it. I just worried because stuff like staring and focusing on moving water will definitely make me dizzy, but really only makes me uncomfortable. Same with staring at a phone while someone else is driving. Trying to decide if I should go to the pharmacy and get some meds to take tonight.

Have heard the term " delveloping sea legs " It's true, the first few trips into the ocean I'm uncomfortable then each trip improves. So I develop my sea legs before I head out, here's how. Stand up with your arms outstretched ( that's for balance ) now look straight up and start spinning keep it up as long as you can. When you stop you'll feel nauseous, that's a mild sea sickness your feeling. I do this 2-3 time a day a couple days out. Helps me significantly

I live in the East Bay and would like to try fishing for Leopard shark, not certain of the bait to use, the proper rig, or of a good location. Would welcome any suggestions, recommendation or comments.

Thanks,

Tomales Bay anywhere from shore along Highway # 1 with Marshall being my favorite. The pier that wraps around a little rock at the tip of the Tiburon peninsula at raccoon straight. China camp / Mcnears on San Pablo bay in Marin County. Bolinas lagoon along HWY #1 .There are many more but these have been my favorite for leopard shark. You MUST, MUST clean/ gut remove everything RIGHT AWAY or the urine secreted through I believe the skin will leave a nasty Ammonia taste to the meat making it inedible.

There is a fly fishing blog by Dan Blanton, there are many who fish San Luis regularly and post often of when and where they fish. You can also search the archives.

Hey all, I’m not much of a fisherman, but my great uncle Charles gave me a fishing rod when I went on a fishing trip with my papa to Charles and his families area in Minnesota. I haven’t used it since because I’m fairly unfamiliar with what I’ll need and where to go, let alone if it’s legal. I’ve wanted to get into fishing as it is very peaceful for me and I love the water. I just don’t have a need to keep the fish and am not in a good position to pay for a fishing license if I don’t need one 🤷

No license needed for some jetties. At doran park in bodega bay California you can fish the jetty at the harbor entrance, the fish and game also give a little lee way as to where the jetty meets the land.

I’ve started learning a lot of knots and was wondering what you favourite line to lure knot is. My personal favourite is the Trilene knot because I can tie it when my hands are cold.

Clinch, uni, double uni, loop knot. This covers it all for me fly fishing and conventional mono, braid and florocarbon

A winter steelhead on a fly is called a fish of a thousand casts here in Northern California. Put a slow moving fly on their nose. I find water that I could swing a fly and keep it just off the bottom without snagging. Generally this is water 3-6 feet in a laminar flow moving slowly, I adjust my cast across or slightly up stream to cover as much water as possible. The last quarter of the swing is when your presenting good and is where the take will happen. They often follow and grab when the fly stops directly down stream of you. It's all about presenting.......Steelhead like to eat many different bugs. My confidence fly is a General Practitioner named for our early doctors that were so deadly.

We had golden eagles in Wyoming that would grab a lamb and fly off with it. They’re huge.

Yes, big and smart. I watched a Golden eagle on steep hill side snatch a new born lamb, carry it far down the hill ( 100 yards )
far enough from mom that she never came looking.

Nice fish and nice pics. You sure picked a good pardner to fish with!.. Not familiar with the steelhead in a lake, can you clue me in? thanks for sharing.

Before Warm springs Dam was built on Dry creek to make Lake Sonoma it was a major spawning ground for Steelhead from the Russian River. Some fish were caught behind the dam after construction. I'm not sure but have heard that the hatchery at the Dam also stocks steelhead into Lake Sonoma. Anyhow, A friend of mine who's family owns a ranch on Dry creek above the dam, told me they see many 3-6 lb Trout/steelhead spawning up the creek every winter.
The theroy is the fish use the lake as their ocean and spawn in the creeks that feed the lake.

I use the elastic thread to attach to long shank 2x long 2x heavy #4 hook . Ty with a loop knot, Tiemco 5262 works well. The riffle above the pool produces as many fish as the deep pool.

I went on a 5 mile hike along the American River this weekend. The main trail was about 300 feet elevation above the river. The final 1/4 mile leads down to the river.

At the end of the hike, thinking I could save some time hiking back, I thought I’d follow the river at the river’s edge. This worked good for about ten minutes before I was scaling boulders and wading through waist-deep water. I finally hit canyon walls that forced me to retreat to the trail. But, as luck would have it, I found a 20 to 30 foot hole (a couple of them actually) that was full of beautiful fat rainbows that looked to be 20+ inches. Having no fishing gear with me I began plotting my return.

My guess is this spot has been fished very rarely, if at all. It’s not navigable by boat and only some lunatic who though they could find a shortcut by hiking into a canyon for an hour (me) would have stumbled upon it.

I’ll be heading back real soon with my pole. Any suggestions of what I should use for bait since this is not normally my type of fishing? I’ll report back with better pics.

Use a small screen at your feet in shallow fast water turn rocks over and to loosen the bugs hope for a Hellgrammite. With a split shot cast into riffle upstream of the large hole let it drift into the hole . Be prepared if presented right you will hook the largest fish in the hole.
