I spend time on some fast flowing rivers, and some choppy lakes. I always get a bit woozy at first, but I adjust and relax and it usually dissapears. I also make sure to watch where we’re going and keep looking at the shore. Then I can enjoy the night. I’ve also done some night fishing in some choppy water and been just fine(beer probably helped).

But tomorrow I’m going on my first offshore trip, maybe 20 miles outside in San Diego. I believe it’s suppose to be 5 foot chops that last around 10 seconds. Guy I’m going with said that’s not too rough, but still recommend I take some medicine. But most of the medicine can make vision blurry, which also doesn’t sound like fun, and I’m visiting with a rental car, and my wife refuses to drive in a city this large. I’m also not one who vomits much. I may have vomited 2 times in the last 3-5 years, usually while I have a fever.

So how bad is sea sickness? Anyone else suffer from it. I just worried because stuff like staring and focusing on moving water will definitely make me dizzy, but really only makes me uncomfortable. Same with staring at a phone while someone else is driving. Trying to decide if I should go to the pharmacy and get some meds to take tonight.

Everyone different though with me I usually only have a problem if lose sight of shore. I do take Dramamine with no side effects and it really helps. As a precaution I would take it especially if going a long way from shore or just to be safe.

It is a real thing and if there is any doubt, take the meds. If you get sick, you’re in for a long day. Keep your eye on the horizon and stay upright, or at least on your feet if possible. Good luck!

Can be. The medicine ain’t much better cause it makes you groggy and you don’t feel like doing anything. Spent a lot of time out there. Only took the Dramamine once. Never did get sick but nauseated once or twice. It has to do with the motion. Had a friend that was a commercial fisherman and he got sick ONE time. Said it was when all the right “conditions” came together. There is a reason charter boats are open and drain to the back. After a trip watch what they do. Take a big powerful hose and just wash everything (vomit) to the back and overboard to feed the fish. I would take the medicine (night before trip) and then evaluate if it is worth it. I always focused on the clouds if I felt it coming on. Usually too busy to notice BUT do not go down below in the head!

Some people have a great deal of trouble with it. My wife will never go on another cruise with me.

I was on a charter out of Daytona once and did not take the meds. We went 80 miles out in seas the Captain really didn’t want to. 2 1/2 hours of bouncing on the way out got to me and I went below to join 2 of my buddies. One took the meds, the other did not. It was most likely a coincidence that we may have been over served the night before, but it was not a fun voyage. We caught a bunch of fish, though. My buddy caught his only fish right away…a 45lb Amberjack that had his way with him. Chuck got the fish in and puked over the side (he, like me…did not take the meds). He went below and did not return until we were back in port. I was fighting it off as I battled a pair of 15lb snapper on the same line. These fish did not get along and kicked my butt as well. It was my turn to chum, but went back to fishing for a couple hours for more snapper and trigger fish.
The host asked me if I had any chameleon in my family as I went from white to green in seconds 😉
I finally had to crash as I lost my bearings. I missed out on the grouper hole , but we had a great time. On the way back, the host apologized for not dumping a bucket of water over my head…supposed to be an instant remedy, too. Something to think about.
Once I saw the port on the horizon I felt like a million bucks, grabbed a beer and a sandwich.

I don’t get seasick but I do know that, when needed, the meds work. Take them a couple of hours before going out and you will get the best effect. They don’t work as well if you wait till you get sick.

Yes Dramamine an hour before & drink Ginger Ale while on the boat. Ginger is a natural stomach reliever.

FS is right Ginger is a natural remedy for sea sickness if you have a Asian market in your area go pick up some pickled ginger and when you feel sick start chewing on some good luck 🍀👍

Being seasick sucks. Take all the advice given. Only happens to me on the ocean if I lose sight of land. But when it happens. My day is over until we hit land again. Good luck

In all my 60 plus years saltwater fishing have never been seasick, plenty who went with me have. My sons would be sick first day out then after that would be ok. We've been out in some rough days. Seems the swell on the ocean is worse than wind chop.

The Ocean is very brutal and none forgiving been out by the Farlon island with friends and I got sick but managed to get my sea legs and haven’t been sick since had some friends right out the gate where we haven’t even left the dock and were already sick 🤮🤮🤢😵if you are new to the Ocean take medicine the night before and just before you get on boat you’ll thank yourself later for doing it
