I live in the East Bay and would like to try fishing for Leopard shark, not certain of the bait to use, the proper rig, or of a good location. Would welcome any suggestions, recommendation or comments.

Thanks,

Use a Carolina rig (real simple), 3/0 or so hook and for bait use squid or chunks of mackerel if you can get it. Sardines or anchovies work well too, tie em onto your hook with magic thread. Can't tell you where any good spots are, never fished there.
For a leader I would use 80 pound Dacron. Main line 20 or so braid.

they are fun to catch and release.
The Argo runs shark trips out of Fisherman's wharf. Live anchovies, when available,
squid if not, are hard to beat.
they put up a nice fight, and when you catch one, you are very likely to catch more.
I do know they are caught just north of Emeryville , from the shore, but being in a boat
so you move around based on tide flow , is nearly a sure thing.
Good luck!

We've caught em out at Tomales Bay while halibut fishin.
I caught one bout 5 feet long, put up one heck of a fight. Landed it so we could get our halibut rig back, then released it.

My plan is to catch and cook on the grill. I imagine they would look nice in an aquarium.

Thanks!

Tomales Bay, I'll have to check it out. I would hope to catch something just over the minimum legal limit (36"), but sounds like an adventure.

From past experience I can say there must be quiet a few sharks in Tomales Bay. The day we caught the 5 footer, we caught 3 or 4 others while drifting for halibut.

Nice, I would be happy with a keeper.

When we were kids we would use squid on sturgeon rigs from the old San Mateo Bridge (closed to the public now)
Fish at least an hour on each side of the tide and you can also hook up some skates which are a good fight too.

All the ones we caught that day I think were keepers. Maybe 1 of them was short, IDK.

I have fished and caught many times in San Pablo bay for leopard sharks. I use a simple rig for Stripper, or leopard sharks. Any cut bait will work. I find a deep hole in the sea bottom on depth finder , get up current and let the bait roll into the low lying hole. The sharks seem to like holes, and this method works. If you like to eat fish they are delicious, firm white flesh. The added benefit is this rig will also catch Strippers. I would launch from Marin side, or point Richmond.
