I am planning a trip to this reservoir this coming week, and could use some tips on baits and area that will make my day at the reservoir a good one.

My name is Steve, I am a Viet Nam Vet, Air Force.

thank you for any input

Welcome to the Stage Steve, and thank you for your service. I'm sorry that I can't help you with your reservoir, but I don't even know where it is. If you go back to your profile page and put in a city and state where you are,you should get more responses to your questions. We have members coast to coast and overseas, and most probably don't know where that is either. Thank you and good luck!

Welcome aboard Steve and thank you for your service. I see in your profile it says you’re in hiding. Don’t worry. We’re not coming to hog your fishing spot. At least not me. Not yet anyway 😁😁😁

Welcome, I think you are going to San Luis Reservoir, California. Fished there 10 years ago from the bank for striped bass and catfish. Used cut up frozen sardines and fished along highway 152? at anyone of the places where you can pull off the road. It can be quite a walk down to the water. There is someone on this site that fishes San Luis. There are also black bass in the reservoir. Fishing is also available in the Forebay below the reservoir.

Hello Steve depending on what side you are coming from if you are going from the gilroy area there is a bait shop somewhere around that area that supplies most of the fishermen who fish the San Luis lake I’m they won’t mind filling you in on what to use and where good luck 🍀

thank you so much for the info. I think the shop is east of the fore bay, on the road between I5 and 152.

There is a fly fishing blog by Dan Blanton, there are many who fish San Luis regularly and post often of when and where they fish. You can also search the archives.

Hi Steve,
If you are fishing from a boat live minnows work great. Anchovies and cut squid do well bank fishing. If you have a boat look for diving birds. They are feeding on schools of shad. Rapalas cast into the balls of shad will work well also.
PS you will be targeting striped bass.

Plan an alternative. The wind can very often be ridiculous. The forebay is often fishable when the lake is not. It's been a long time, but I did well on schooling stripers with cut herring. I lived near Monterey, so it was a bit of a drive. I quit going as the wind prevented us from fishing more often than not. If you can get around the wind, it was great fishing. If you fish the forebay, bring folding chairs.

Steve it’s evident you’ve come to the right spot. These folks have given you everything except a baited fishing pole. The rest is up to you. Good luck. Please take some photos when you do go. We all like photos.
