I personally never could get use to not relying on my thumb ! 50 years of this no way would I want to trust the reel ! Just me old dogs new tricks syndrome I guess !

Water haul casts will cure most of your issues ! Also u may shorten your leader this will help with turnover . If water is 5’ deep , leader length in the 6’ range should be plenty. The trick is to keep as much line off the water as possible to attain best drift ! Maintain tight line on drift once hit occurs your ready to set up
Most figure 10% @ 1. 5 to 2 MPH surface ! However some days underlying currents and wind conditions will vary this number ! So I used to put 100’ of cable out with 12# slim weight to attain 90’ ! My back machine kept track of ball depth !
Rotation matched clockwise spool spin , match to line off spool with same rotation ! This is for spinning , conventional I do spool to spool same no issues ! You basically want the line to lay on your reel with same way it was wound on spool .
The man , the myth , the legend ! All the credit in the world to making people believe that even Pike are man eaters ! I guess I missed the bluegill episode , that was responsible for eating villagers in some remote location !😜🤫
Another Chinese knock off ! However I would say the Fenwick rods have decent tapers ! Lee’s seems to have better product but may be costly ! I use Daiwa pretty much exclusively so I’m no expert on BP , I know one thing my local tackle shops are cheaper !!!
If you use an 8 carrier braid which is softer then most 4 carrier , unless you fish several times a week you should be fine ! Like mentioned tip will wear first , easily replaced
If anything wears, it will be the front guide on the end of the rod. They are easily replaced. When you buy a replacement, get the kind with a ceramic insert...they won't wear out.
TFO are supposed to be better rods , however if you can try the outfit out if you k ow how to cast this will help you select ! If you can’t cast then you should by all means go to local fly shop let them help you with basics of casting . They probably have that outfit available to test cast . Reel is the least important part of outfit rod to match line can be very important ! However there’s a caveat if you don’t know you don’t know what’s best for you ! There’s where the fly shop can fill a big void !
Always use a wading belt , plus a good wading staff and finally use stud bottom boots ! I’m your age group and fish a lot in winter and cold weather months . The above keeps me upright and dry ! If your fishing heavy flows in big waters then by all means wear a personal safety floatation vest !
