When I was about 10, my dad took me to some sloughs on the Columbia River for some bass. We were casting plugs with 2 treble hooks on them. I cast out and it hung up while I was reeling it back in. After trying some different things to get it loose I just put a big yank on the pole. The plug came loose and came straight to my face with a treble on my right eyebrow and the other just below my eye in the upper part of my cheek. Luckily the hooks did not go in past the barbs and my dad was able to get me loose without going to the hospital. I didn't fish with plugs for a good number of years after that.

Spirit, I make light and ultra light casting rods.lol I am a lil weird tho.

No you are not weird. I have used ultra light gear for almost 60 years after leaving home. I have fished rivers, creeks and lakes all over the State of Washington. I have fished the canals out of Homestead Fla when I was stationed there. I also fished the Atlantic off a friend's boat with that gear. It is a lot of fun to work a bigger fish using ultralight and not a telephone pole and winch.

I recently stuck myself with a lure when I took it out of the tackle box. In a coupe of days it festered up, took a knife point to it, drained it, wiped with hydrogen peroxide and went on with life. I could tell you I died but you probably would not believe me as I am writing this and have to be alive to do it. I really do think I would be more concerned about a cow falling out of the sky and landing on me.

This past summer I had the opportunity to bring my nephew out on the water a few times. He’s 8, and hasn’t had much real “guy time” at all, or any opportunity to spend time in the outdoors.

I was worried he wasn’t going to be into it, but he took to it immediately, and by the end of the first day was using a spinning reel, running the trolling motor and catching fish. We’ve been out a few times since, and he’s surprisingly tough! Cold, windy days, getting skunked, tangles and snags....none of it bothers him a bit.

My question is, for those of you that fish with children, what is your advice for those of us new to it? I want this to be as positive of an experience as I can make it. Anything your parent/mentor told you that stuck, ways to explain techniques, life lessons, tips to staying engaged...whatever!

We set him up with a spinning rod/reel of his own, and he’s been practicing his casting in the yard. I’m going to spend a day teaching him about knots and fishing etiquette/practices, and same with boating and general water safety. I feel like I’m covering the basics, but can’t help but think that there’s stuff I’m missing.

I was lucky enough to grow up in the woods and on the water with family, and just want him to have that opportunity too.

Cheers and tight lines!

I had three kids I took fishing from the age of they could walk until they grew up. I took my grandkids fishing from the same time, I am now taking my great grandkids fishing. I have only one word of advise for you. Patience.

We had running water too. All we had to do was run back from the river with the bucket full of water.

How’s it going folks. Me and some buddies are going trout fishing and none of us really have any experience as anglers. I have $70 on an academy gift card and I’d like to find a good rod and reel combo within that price range or perhaps lower so I can put the extra towards a second rod. What do you suggest?

For over 50 years I have been fishing for trout here the Okanogan of Washington State with an Eagle Claw 6' ultra light with a small Shakespeare ultra light spinning reel with 4 lb test line that I can get at just about any Walmart or such for very little money. I also used that pole when I was stationed at Homestead AFB in Florida for bass in the canals and out on the ocean with a friend of mine who had a BBQ place and boat. Caught a lot of red snapper and a few mackerel. Here in Washington I have caught trout, bass, walleye, carp and a couple of salmon. Yes it did take a while for the bigger fish but I learned a long time ago it was ultra light gear and not a telephone pole with a warn winch. For creek fishing for trout I like to use a 9 ft fly rod with a bait reel on it. I can reach across many creeks with it and can put the bait in just about any little hiding place I want.

If your mother has no income the judge will probably make your dad pay for her attorney. Most property will probably be split between them. If your dad is drawing VA disability it is his, your mother gets none of it. She does need to be represented, go to another town to find an attorney.

A sad story indeed. Lights on a pier is a good idea. Now, living on the river, they knew the dock was there and just as driving a car, it is up to the driver to not hit inanimate objects. This also reinforces the idea of wearing floatation devices. I know, I have heard it before, I am a good swimmer, etc., my usual response to that is how far can you swim unconscious? Nothing says you will be conscious when you hit the water.

In some states, Washington being one of them, the property owner does not have to post their land. The law is, it is up to the individual to know if it is private or public and to get permission if private.

I typically fish in a different neighborhood for each species, so I get around. I have one for gar, one for carp (my gar hood is militantly opposed to non-residents fishing there because that lake is full of footballs, but they let me fish because I take their trash), one for bass, catfish, etc. I run into other fishermen all the time, and aside from a small kid wanting to keep their first fish that's too small, I haven't seen much of anything illegal beyond putting tilapia back, which I admittedly do occasionally.

The first trout stocking happened the day before Thanksgiving, so I've been chasing them almost exclusively at the public park lake. I've been 5 or 6 times since, for only an hour or 2 each time, but EVERY time, I've seen SOMETHING illegal. It's a highly pressured pond, not bigger than 2 acres, and it's pretty standard for there to be 3-5 other guys fishing, mostly for catfish. People fish with 3 or 4 rods (2 rod limit), take more than the limit, and today I saw 2 guys using a casting net. On top of all that, I've spent at least 15 minutes cleaning up trash/discarded line 20 feet from trashcans all but one time, and that's because I was last to leave in the evening and the first there in morning, as I felt like soaking a line before work.

Would you make the call? Given how many disregard regulations and how freely they discuss their violations, I tend to doubt whether or not many of these guys are even licensed.

Several of them are clearly feeding their families, which is where I pause.

What say you?

Think about it for a minute. You are only there for a hour or two at a time and this is what you see in that period. How many violations do you guess are happening that you do not see? Multiply what you see by any number you pick and imagine what will happen to that fishery in very short order. Do your part to protect your fishing and call fish and game.

I have been told by doctors, etc that in order to live a long life I need to do this or that or cut this out and so on. At 78 I think I have found the secret to a long life so I can keep fishing, hunting, Motorcycle riding etc and I can drink whatever I feel like such as a diet coke or root beer or a velvet with water back. Oh, the secret I found allows me to do whatever I want, eat or drink whatever I want and that secret is just do not die.
