I recently got a fishing pole, reel, and hit the water to begin my adventure. I was given a chatter bait by a gentleman who sold me the pole. Today while I was out fishing, I stabbed or hooked myself with the chatter bait and it drew blood. What should I do or can I catch anything? Please help and give me some advice since my paranoia is eating away at me.

I've stabbed myself an uncountable amount of times. Nothing has ever happened. Not to say it cant. Clean it, and keep an eye on it. Its just like any other wound you receive. Most likely it will be nothing. But if it starts to swell and get out of hand go see a doctor.

are we talking hooks or needles? Idk man, like you borrowed this stuff from someone who recently happened to stab themselves and then preserved it and passed it on to you who withing a very short time frame also injected the hook into your veins? If you borrowed this from someone cant you just ask them, "hey did you stab yourself with this and do you have any communicable diseases?" To be quite honest, there's always a slim chance, but this is the equivalent of tripping over a raised piece of sidewalk, scraping your knee, and then worrying that someone else may have done the same thing and now you're infected

Generally speaking a hollow needle carries a much larger risk of transmitting some disease than a plain sharp edge like a hook. It is highly unlikely that some bloodbourne disease has spread to you unless the hook was recently covered in someone elses blood (Recently as in the last few hours). If this has happened not on the first cast, but later when the water has washed the hook it is even more unlikely. I would not worry. Most surgeons I know frequently get some blood in their eyes or injure themselves with bloody sharp objects. And even then the risk of transmitting something is incredibly small (about 1%, IF the patient has a transmittable disease).

It sounds like you’re worried that if the other gentleman stabbed himself, it might now be transferred to you.

HIV can live up to 6 days outside the body. Hepatitis b survive up to 7 days. Hep C can live up to 3 weeks.

All that is assuming it’s not being constantly washed off.

When you’re using a lure, it is shaking and rattling and any kind of that stuff is being washed off. Yeah, you’ll have some gross other things on the hook, but you’ll be fine. Your poop might turn green for a day or two from bacteria, but you’ll be fine.

The biggest threat is tetanus. As long as you’ve had a shot in the last 10 years, I’m sure you’re safe.

You'll be fine haha. At the very most, depending on the water and if you cleaned the wound, you could get an infection. But nothing transmitted.

You should be Okay just make sure that your tetanus is up to date. If I remember correctly the shot is good for 10 years. If you are 100% sure go get the tetanus shot 💉 just to be on the safe side...

Make sure that you have an antibiotic with you whenever fishing for this and other cuts while fishing. Cuts gotten whil fishing can become so serious that the skin starts to rot.
