Top water baits early morning (Buzz Bait, Pop R) spinner bait early through all day, shallow running crank bait, lipless crank bait (rattling bait). along with Texas rig worm, weightless worm and Carolina rig and frogs.
You need to match the rod strength with what you are bait/lure you are fishing with. The more expensive reel makes it easier to work the lure/bait and the rod strength for the weight of the lure/bait.
No problem on the Alabama River. You need to work it with the current and not against. Can even come at side angles. Fish feed on what is coming with the current and not against normally. I work all baits with the current.
I have barid on 2 of my 10 rod&reels. Carolina rig and Flippin setup. Everything else is mono. I understand the things of braid but have never had a problem with using mono. If your rod&reel are matched and the reel is set up correctly you can cast almost as far as just braided line. Everyone has to like the way they do things or it will not matter what you use because you have no confidence in what you are doing.
As with the 2 gentlemen before me spinner baits are great in lilly pads. Also can use weightless Texas rigged worms and lizards. They will mostly float on the water and can be pulled up on the lilly pad leaves. I you leave some of the bait hanging off of the leaf it entices the bass to take it. EXPERIMENT!!!!!

Setting the hook does not cost you anything. Great learning skill. When you hook in to a fish(es) you will know which tug is what. Especially a swim bait or spinner bait but definetly when plastic worm fishing. That was the best teacher I could have ever had. Didn't take long because I was letting a lot of fish get off and never knew it.

Mine had a grease fitting at/in front on the engine the cable ran through. You might be able to add grease on the side where the steering rod runs through.
