I dont fish for them but was told hot dogs work great.

I find hot dogs hard to keep on hook unless you go with all the bs & wrap them...cut-up bluegill is my favorite!!

Beginner's luck! Good for him. I hope that gives him incentive to learn to control that thing better. He has no idea just how lucky he was that the bait wasn't just hit and spit. Thanks for sharing. Nice pics.

luck counts!!

On that note there is a neat little tool called QuickRigger to aid in putting a O-Ring on Wacky baits...saves a lot of time & also saves a lot of baits from being torn up.

I’ve kept 1 old metal box and it’s full of old lures. It’s a hobby I have and I plan on leaving most all of it to family. Have old fishing line on the spools and 2 I think on wooden spools. Just things that will never be back.

Went fishing on a 4 1/2 ac. pond today 12:00 to 2:00 At 1:45 pm I hooked in to a bass that was 6 lbs and 12 oz. Caught 16 bass in 2 hrs. and also caught a bass that weighed 6 lbs. and 8 oz. Also caught a bass that weighed 5 lbs and 8 oz. Caught 4 others that weighed between 4.25 lbs and 4.85 oz.

I am 71 years old, born and raised in the Arkansas Delta. Have fished all my life and caught many bass, bream, catfish, and crappie and others. I lived in Texas for 15 years and never landed a bass larger than 6lbs. I hooked into maybe 15 bass that were larger than 10 lbs., but never were able to get them into the boat. Bad back can't fish in a boat anymore

The biggest bass I caught was on a custom bream wake bait. The 6.8 bass I caught on a Mega Bass Griffin. The 5.8 bass was on a Bagley small fry yellow belly bream. The 4 pounders were caught on a Frog 120 Choppo topwater bait. I fished soft worms, but the bass wanted something moving. I live in Gahanna OH.

Texas rig is my go-to, I rarely have that problem. It used to happen to me more as a kid because I wasn't as adept at feeling the bite and setting the hook

Do you notice a higher rate of gut hooked fish with the Texas rig?

The last 2 times using it, I've gut hooked fish. Only ever gut hooked bass using the Texas rig. The first time was understandable, I was using a big hook and a 9inch worm and though that was the reason, but yesterday I gut hooked another bass with a regular sized set up.

My theory is that unlike a rig like a drop shot where they'll gulp the "head" of the worm first, they're engulfing the whole thing from the hook end first, and since the hook is long, that goes down their throat faster and even if you're fast with the hook set they swallow it.

I like Texas rigs because they're simple, and they catch fish, but I don't seem to have good luck with them and was curious if that was other peoples' opinion as well. I think I'm going to stop throwing it.
Boy, do I? I’ve got two brand new ones in my vintage collection [ still in the box], plus a couple of Baby 13’s. A white w/ red front Lucky 13 was the only plug I had when I was about ten-years old, throwing it on a 5ft Solid fiberglass casting rod [I think was SouthBend] and an ol’ knuckle buster, a jeweled Pflueger [ the one with the engraved side plates. Don’t have my original reel any longer, it got pretty beat up thru my childish abuse. Since then, I’ve acquired four of the reels, one in the original box that I passed on to my son, had the price tag on it $6.20. I hope he understands what he has. Memory Lane: do you remember the old River Runts. That was my second plug. Think I still have a couple of those in frog pattern that I acquired used about 30 some years ago. Hadn’t seen one in a store probably in 50 years. Back when there were still mom-n-pop type hardware stores in business, and I traveled with my job, I’d go in and talk fishing plugs. Most would have an old box of stuff stuck in the back room; some would let me look and buy, others didn’t want to be bothered with it. There are probably still a lot of the old stock out there like garage-find autos.
in metal tackle boxes!! river runts YES!! and Hawaiian wigglers!!!
