Cabela’s about 18 miles from me. Basspro about 40 miles but mired in NYC southern CT traffic nightmares. Since the merger I am Ok with most of the fishing stuff but Cabela’s brands of clothing suited me much better than Bass Pro’s which has taken over and don’t get me started on the Bass Pro lack of Kayak fishing accessories. Fortunately I have a local dealer where I can satisfy my Yak cravings.

Which is why I treat any Facebook Marketplace , Craigslist etc . With extreme suspicion . But in all fairness if you going to buy a boat etc . Get the cash first. As a seller I only take a cash via transfer app like Venmo, Cashapp etc on anything that costs more than a couple of hundred bucks

I use a Humminbird Helix 5 Chirp GPS Di G3 mounted on an Old Town PDL 106. It is still relatively new to me but so far so good. I found the screens on the smaller units to be too small for my aging eyes and I didn’t want one to large as space in a 10’ 6” yak can get limited. So a 5 inch screen seemed like a decent compromise. The old towns have a mounting bracket on the bottom of the hull for the transducer. I have not done much work with down imaging yet. Depending the amount of detail you need you may want to upgrade from the included Humminbird base maps . I use on lakes and with a kayak detailed navigational items are not really needed. The Humminbird base map has 10 foot contour lines.

Yes , that is the state wide creel limit but in most of the areas I fish it is much less, like two or C&R (Farminton River and some TMAs ) Nice catch none the less

Gulp alive containers need to stay upright and I don’t take off the under cap seal. I only peel back what I need and keep it on.It seems to work. Geez why would I go to Walmart or Dicks to buy real worms. Between where I live and the 15 miles to my fav lake, there have to be -a dozen places selling bait ( night-crawlers, trout worms and red worms) If they aren’t fresh then I move on to the next . But so many places I fish for trout are C&R only or have two fish creel limits live bait is just bad . Trout gulp down live bait resulting in gut hooking which makes C&R tough. Gulp helps because I find is not gutted as often .

Keep the liners on the bottles and screw them down tight

Great job for Rainbow. It was a slow summer. Maybe because the river flow was so slow this summer. From my yak I was skunked on bass, caught a few pan fish on some trips but skunked on more. Then there was the blue green algae bloom at the end of the summer

Strapped onto the dock side of the boat. Wouldn’t be without it. Never know when that prop might hit something hidden. Also helps when in heavy weeds. Lift up the prop and paddle.

Here is my launch list. Night before hook up the trailer. Drop the boat from the cradle on the garage ceiling and slide into the trailer. Load tackle, rods, life vest paddle, etc . into the SUV (ok, my SUV Is a diaper hauler buts I it gets got gas mileages and is comfy.) Morning of get my coffee and water and head out. Park in the boat launch ramp, slide the boat onto its cart, install seat, install PDL , place crate with tackle in the boat and put rods i holders, Drags to the ramp and launch. Return cart to SUV and off I go .

It is Johnson Outdoors, not Johnson Controls. I have found Johnson Outdoors to be a superb company. The bought Eureka under the umbrella and the products have improved immensely . They also have also bought Old Town Canoe and the infusion of capital has given some really great fishing kayaks and I speak from experience that the customer serve is awesome. I would not worry about Minn Kotas future . If experience is anything it will get way better . The other cool thing is the let the companies keep their identies and people. Seems all positive to me

On old post for sure, but I can say I had a less expensive but not cheap kayak for years. It was an LL Bean rebrand Perception 13 foot sit in yak with a couple of rod holders. It did the purpose and got me on the water and got me hooked on yak fishing. But I found managing the paddle, rods and drifting was a lot of work. But this year when a bought and Old Town Sportsman PDL kayak like has really changed . Way more stable more room and my arms and hands are free to fish , leaving the propulsion to my legs. It makes kayak fishing that much better and at my age i can troll, hold myself stable , back up, turn on a dime etc. I appreciate the stability . However it requires a trailer as it weighs i at 100 lbs. Start with what you can, but put some left over cash in the coin jar to save up for a sit on top true fishing kayak . You won’t be sorry.

Sometimes new is better . My new Oldtown sportsman kayak spanks the butt of my prior ones. My simple Ford Escape circa 2013 has 160,000 miles on it an still going. Good luck doing that with an 80’s or 90’s vehicle
