Looking at getting a kayak, what are some cheaper hobby kayak you would recommend that could be converted to a fishing kayak?

So price range is $300-500 preferably. In college, so the cheaper, the better.

I've looked into it some, but getting other peoples recommendations always helps!

Side question: how in the h*ll would I install roofracks for a kayak on a 2007 ford focus sedan? (Less important but if you know where to get them/how to install, much appreciated)

Any of the sundolphin or pelican yaks will get you out there and you can easily install accessories to make it a “fishing kayak”. Mine is actually one that I found at Ocean State Job Lots of all places. It’s a Future Beach kayak that came with rod holders installed so it saved me some work. I think regularly it was like $299, on sale for $249 and I got a $100 gift card with it. Deals can be found. You don’t need anything overly high tech for most lakes/ponds/small rivers.

I just bought the cheapest 10 foot kayak i could find. I think it's called a pelican x100 or something like that. The way I see it, it doesnt matter what kind of bells and whistles are on it, as long as i can get on the water.

They make roof racks for sedans, but you might have to buy a stock rack that slides into the roof of your car before buying a kayak rack to go on top of that.

Check your area Facebook marketplace too. I just picked up a Vibe Yellowfin for a decent price from a guy just a half hour away.

Of course used is a great option to get more bang for your buck, but if you have to some Walmarts carry yaks and quite often misprice them online (usually at much lower.) They will match the lower online price as long as its not a third party vendor.

As far as a roof rack, I was trying to get one for my `04 Saturn Vue and went to Amazon and typed in " roof racks " and all kinds showed up, but as I looked I noticed in the top left corner there was a place to put in your cars info and once you do that it will show racks that will fit only your car or truck. Most run in the $60 to $120 range. Believe me I was pulling my hair out trying to find one for that Saturn, I think yours will be a bit easier.

I have been kayak 🎣 for years now. It is best to keep an i on Craigslist or Facebook Market Place for a used Yak. Depending on what kind of water you fish (tidal or open water ) try to atay away from the sit inside's DANGEROUS.

On old post for sure, but I can say I had a less expensive but not cheap kayak for years. It was an LL Bean rebrand Perception 13 foot sit in yak with a couple of rod holders. It did the purpose and got me on the water and got me hooked on yak fishing. But I found managing the paddle, rods and drifting was a lot of work. But this year when a bought and Old Town Sportsman PDL kayak like has really changed . Way more stable more room and my arms and hands are free to fish , leaving the propulsion to my legs. It makes kayak fishing that much better and at my age i can troll, hold myself stable , back up, turn on a dime etc. I appreciate the stability . However it requires a trailer as it weighs i at 100 lbs. Start with what you can, but put some left over cash in the coin jar to save up for a sit on top true fishing kayak . You won’t be sorry.
