Any reports from Lake Camanche? Heading there next week. Bass and/or trout.
I’ve been fishing ultralight for over 50 years. Originally it was rods 4-1/2’ to 5-1/2’, small reels that weighed less than 7oz., and 2lb test line.
Rods have gotten longer and lighter, Bering made of graphite instead of fiberglass, reels smaller and lighter, and line thinner.
I’ve built several rods from 6’ to 7’ using fly rod blanks sometimes 3 or 4 weight. They seem to be lighter, more flexible, and more backbone.
Everybody has their own preferences. Personally I use 6’ to 7’ ro d depending on the situation. Small reels that I like to keep around 6oz and 2lb test.
My PB was a trout that went 12lb on 2lb test.
I’ve been using 2lb test for years. Think about it, how big are the trout/fish you usually catch? Just set your drag.
I’ve caught 12lb trout on 2lb test. Not really the same but the fight was great.
Caught Bonita at Radondo with some friends. All I had was ultra light trout gear. What a blast!
Anybody fishing the east bay lakes. How’s the fishing? Thinking of going this coming week.
We used to do that at Clear Lake in the tules, called it tule dipping. Caught a mess of bass using this technique. But it was a bit limiting. Thus, Dee Thomas developed “Flipping”.
I have a brand new one, still in its original box.
Try night crawlers, or a half of one under a small bobber.
I caught a 12lb trout using a Mitchell 408 on 2lb test.
Rocky, Rocky Jr., if you can find them.
Slim pickings that close to the city.
Putah Creek, below Lake Berryessa cones to mind.
Alameda Creek, along Hwy 85 east of Fremont.
Marin County north, there may be some places.
Russian River
I interviewed with That Dam Company when they first opened. Was top three, but they wanted someone with more recreational experience.
I’ve heard there were large bass in there. I’ve heard people would bring in live bass and plant them themselves. Not really good, but doesn’t seemed to have hurt the lake. Unless those big bass are feeding on the planted trout.
