It’s called a spiral wrap. Puts the guides on bottom out towards the end of rod. I have built a couple and bought a couple. I thinks it helps the fighting of the fish better. It seems to cast better also. IMO A guy named Bud Erhardt made the couple I bought.
Was fishing Salmon River in New York and seen a guy bring his dad every year. His dad was in his 80’s and he would help him out in river with his walker. His dad was a great guy and taught me a lot about salmon fishing, especially about how to fight them in rivers.
A Steelhead, caught on a stream, on a fly rod, is a good fight. I’ve had them jump out on a bank and then back in the water. Have to chase the bigger ones up and down river.
