Wrap-around casting rods

Anyone fish with a wrap around casting rod, i.e., where the guides start at the top of the blank, then spiral around so that towards and at the rod tip they're positioned under the blank like a spinning rod? Brands include Spiralite and Taipan. This configuration supposedly creates a more natural bend under load and reduces sideways torque. If you fish with one, what do you think? Real deal or gimmick? TW has them on sale right now and I've been eyeing them the past couple years but haven't pulled the trigger.

IDK. I suppose they would be OK but I also think it's kinf of a gimmick.

DC Not sure about this one.
Since casting n spinning rods have the proper spine molded into them when they're made.

Not sure how it would cast with line wrapping around like that 👍

I've built several of those acid rods. Have a matched set of four trolling rods. They're great for bottom fishing too, they don't twist in your hand when youre cranking in a big fish from deeper water.

I have one but it’s a spinning rod? I haven’t noticed any negatives to using it verses a normal eyelet configuration. Does seem to help with line twists.

Tight lines

How does that work for spinning rods isn't that against what they are trying to accomplish with a bait casting rod?🎣😎🇺🇸

It’s called a spiral wrap. Puts the guides on bottom out towards the end of rod. I have built a couple and bought a couple. I thinks it helps the fighting of the fish better. It seems to cast better also. IMO A guy named Bud Erhardt made the couple I bought.

I was thinking along those sane lines Henry. The idea is that the tippet guide wants to be in the direction of the fish.

They're kinda fun to build. Just don't put a roller tip on one. They have to be made special for acid rodas and the ran me 25 bucks each .

Hello DG. I have 2 such rods & used them quite a bit after I first bought them. Both rods are 6 footers & I really prefer 7 ft so they were both retired early. When fighting a fish there is very little sideways torque. When first casting the rod I had a tendency to short cast but I got over that quickly. I believe 1 rod is from a company called "castaway" & was quite pricey when I bought it probably 20 years or more ago. Nowadays I'm quite happy with the new rods that weight next to nothing. I never considered minor rod twist or torque an issue.

I have a couple of Bud's rods, too. I think I got them in the late 90s, and I still use them for specific techniques. I tend to favor the shorter 6 ft pistol grip for spinner baits and shallow cranks in tight quarters. I can get pretty accurate (for me) casts with this setup.
