Went back to the river today. Netted 8 and only had one pull out. Putting the fish on the reel with a light drag seems to be the key. Thanks again for the advice

Thanks. Hooks are sharp. I’ll start using the reel with a light drag & see if that helps. There’s a fairly stiff current where I’m fishing and that’s probably helping the fish.

Fishing for trout, mostly stocked rainbow, and roughly 2 out of every 3 fish have the hook pull out before I can get them to the net. Fly fishing with beadhead nymphs. Hook size between 14 and 20. Landed fish were on both larger or smaller hooks- hook size not apparently the issue. Any thoughts on what I’m doing wrong?

Well here a wish for you to catch enough for supper 🍀👍🏽🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🐟🐟🐠🐠🐋🐋🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅

Nice wish, thanks. Wife doesn’t eat fish so I let them all go so I can catch them again when they’re bigger

Back in NJ. Had two get off before I landed my first one. Here’s hoping all of the ones I land are this size.

Bass fishing yesterday. Caught 5 small ones & foul hooked a tilapia on its dorsel fin. I’ve had tilapia hit a lure before & just kind of lay on their side when you reel them in; no fight at all. The foul hooked one put up one heck of a fight. I’d like to get lucky like that some more.

For a knot use either the improve clinch or Orvis knot, whichever one you find easier to tie.
For flies this time of year on the EC I’d stay with bead head nymphs, probably a pheasant tail, hares ear and an attractor like a san juan worm.

God luck

Some fishing shops that sell fly fishing gear give free lessons on how to cast a fly line/ use a fly rod. It’s worth finding one if those and seeing what you think about it all before you do any equipment buying.

The other possibility is a creek chub.

I’ve had both types, most recently the stocking foot ones. If you do any amount of walking in the waders either to or from your fishing spot or while in the water the stocking foot waders are far easier to use. Gravel guards work well to keep the sand out of your boots. Felt soles resist slipping better than do rubber with spikes which is better than just plan rubber soles. If you’re just fishing sandy bottoms it doesn’t matter though. A number of states do prohibit felt soles. Some boots come with soles that can be switched.

I hooked one once fishing in my kayak. I got towed for about half a mile before my line broke. 8lb test if I remember right.

Long ago I caught my first eel. It was about 18 - 20 inches long. Brought it home and put it in a fish tank in my bedroom. I woke up a few days later and the eel was gone. We looked all over but couldn’t find him. A few days after that my sister was cleaning under her bed and found him, still alive and covered in dust bunnies. I put him back in the fish tank and weighed down the cover but at my Mom’s insistence took him down to the lake & let him go the next day.
