Caught them in FLA up to 11#. They are more fun to catch than a big bass.
Do not thumb them like a bass!

Bass are stocked nation wide, but didn't exist nationwide for centuries.

They both look like bluegills to me, the shape is right, but the colors are wrong. Are they bream? Warmouth? I'm pretty sure they're not crappie, neither one of em.

They are bluegill. A lot of fish in that area are very dark due to the decaying plant matter in the lakes. Used to live there. learned to call any sunfish brim, crappie was specs, and a 5 lb catfish was big, but a 6 lb bass was "OK".

A beginner would probably enjoy a zebco 33 combo . Fewer problems and inexpensive. After awhile, you could switch to a spinning or baitcasters if you wish.

Since I moved back North, go out 4-5 times a week, when it's not cold. Only about 3 hours a day

No problems, but I think the company was sold a few years ago. Used gold trout magnets and crappie magnets. Seemed to do better with dark colors in stained water.

I tried trout magnets a few years ago in W.VA. and loved them. Couldn't find them in FLA. Stores, so ordered a bunch online. Still use them if pan fishing.

Shimano rear drag spinning reels are $12-16. Can be fished fresh, or saltwater. IX4000R is a good choice.

Totally agree on the Shimano rear drags. I've got 3 and they never screw up.
