I’m not familiar with that area but you could probably get good info from a fishing tackle or sporting goods store.

Hi Bernie, I was raised in the old town of whiskey town and later moved to French Gulch and there are a lot of streams in that area. Clear creek at French Gulch is good for trout., Whiskey town lake has a group of different kinds of fish . Just drive 299 out of Redding. I know years ago you had to hide behind a tree to bait your hook so the fish don't see you lol

Good Luck on your adventure. I went a couple of years ago and haven't been back. At the time there wasn't many fish. My fav. spot is clear lake from the shore.

Not Clear lake, I meant to say Silver Lake. However its a great place at the restaurant to have breakfast and watch the squirrels try to get into the bird feeder. They have an excellent store also for fishing gear and bait and all the people that work there are very nice and helpful.

I usually did well at convict lake but that was many years ago.

I think the whole area has died off for fishing now. I understand that the fish and game have cut their stocking way down. I still love the area up there. The only other thing is that the gas is so expensive now up there. I usually stay at pine ridge camping area along June lake. On that side of the lake if you walk up the trail there is a fallen tree in the water. Use a #18 treble hook and two pound leader about 3 feet long and you will catch your dinner with green or rose floating bait. The people at the store at pine Ridge told me about that spot. Good luck to you.

Was at June lake first week of June, caught four small rainbows was there three days. Won’t be going back. Didn’t try silver, gull or grant. Did hear they were catching large rainbows in the three to six pound range. At convict lake. Good luck

Its been three years since I've been back there. Its a long drive from Los Angeles and I tried all the lakes with all the right stuff and caught one trout. Also there wasn't hardly anybody there like there used to be. I like shore fishing on Silver lake the best. Lots of trash can bears there anyway lol.

Your very welcome. About 2 feet of 2lb leader with a slider sinker that stops at the top of the leader. A swivel works just fine to not let the sinker go down the leader. Don't forget your landing net.

I have better luck fishing from a boat near the dam for trout. sometimes from the shore is good BUT use a 2 lb. leader and four pound line. Sometimes you have to hide behind a tree to bait your hook.

Welcome aboard.
Take lots of pics.

I've fished Lake Cachuma a lot of times. Their campgrounds are nice and clean with flush toilets and showers. I have pretty good luck with a 2 lb. leader and a no# 18 treble hook with floating bait. Worms are good too. If you rent a boat go close to the dam. It you fish from the shore go down to the other end of the lake. Be sure you have a California fishing license because the Game Warden IS THERE. My son -in-law got caught with no license and he had to go to court and they wanted over $900.00 for the fine, don't take the chance. You can get a license and any other thing you may need for fishing at the lake store. You can take your pet but it can't get close to the lake and there is also a charge. The camping has motorhome camping and tent camping. I have always enjoyed myself there and I'm sure you will also.

I prefer sunfish, crappies, perch or walleye. I have deep fried SMALL largemouth bass along with sunfish and crappies and many don't taste any difference. My late wife used bass instead of salmon in her "salmon loaf" and I thought those were okay. I have found the larger representative of each species to be less palatable than the smaller members. Too each their own. Good Fishing!

I can't stand to eat bass, they stink!!

Take a pair of binoculars with you and scan the lake looking for where the most people are along the shore or check out the water surface and look for where the most boats are and that's where you go to fish because everybody else knows where to go already when you don't.

I like fluorocarbon myself. I use 4lb test line with a 2lb test leader for trout. When I was a kid(70 years ago) you could almost use rope(green cuttyhunk line for those who remember) but the fish have gotten smarter over the years lol.

You can also roll the connecting pieces of the rod behind the ear to keep them from sticking and to pull them apart put the rod behind your butt and bend your knees and pull apart at the same time. This always worked for me.

clothing and a big wide brimed hat tied to your head for the wind will work and less stuff to carry unless you put it in a wagon and pull it out on the pier.
