Was a time when a Beetle Spin was about all I fished with. (Now mainly use jigs.) I know a guy who uses nothing but white Beetle Spins.)
Long live the Beetle Spin!
Almost every place I fish is overpopulated with bass, so there are lots of small ones. They’re private so no limits - size or number. I put back two pounds and up.
Automatic fly reels are heavy!
Nice job. What does it weigh? What kinds of wood did you use?
Welcome to South Mississippi from just a few miles to the northwest in Pearl River County. I fish a lot, but always in fresh water and can't help you with how to fish salt water. There should be plenty of folks who will, thought.
I use a leader of mono or fluorocarbon routinely, though I have tied lures directly to braid. I have a question, though. Why use a 10 or 15 lb. test leader with 50 lb. braid? Why not use braid just a little stronger than the leader, say 20 lb. test? Don't you lose all advantages of a heavy line if you use a leader that is a lot weaker?
Well, I'm not sure how I just did that. Didn't mean to post essentially the same thing twice. I thought the first post did not go through.
These bass came from a small body of water that is overpopulated with small bass, which is common in this area. They did not need to be put back.
These bass were from a small body of water which is over populated with small bass. They did not need to be put back. That is a common situation in this area. Too many people just don’t want to go to the trouble to clean, cook, and eat fish.
I just finished eating bass (largemouth) for lunch. Pan fried in butter and canola oil with lemon pepper seasoning and flour coating. They were great, and they had been in the freezer for a couple months. I wonder how many people who say bass are not good to eat have actually eaten them.
I use mostly open face spinning reels, but have used closed face plenty in the past. My wife uses one now (trigger spin). I don’t understand the criticism of them as I find them very reliable and easy to use.
I haven’t had backlashes. Instead, sometimes line will come off the reel in a knotted snarl. It’s happening less and less, though, which tells me my technique has something to do with it. There’s always something new we can learn, isn’t there? Anyway, that doesn’t happen to my grandson using the Zebco!
I agree completely with those who suggest a Zebco Model 33. In fact, that is exactly what my 7 year old grandson is using now. I’ve been using spinning reels for maybe a half-century and use them now almost everyday. I can still mess up with them and sometimes go back to a spincast - a vintage Garcia Abumatic 170. (I get more birds nests using braid in my spinning reels than mono. What am I doing wrong?)
