Is 8lbs test too much for 1/16oz lures?

In not new to fishing, but I just started to get really in to it, I fish for panfish with a push button zebco and with some of the lures I have (1/16oz) they don’t cast that far, is this because of the fact I have heavier pound test than what I should be using?

I use 10lb braid mainline and a 8lb Fluoro leader for my light setup and it can throw 1/16oz all day

You'll be able to throw them much farther if you either switch to braid w/a leader or move down to 2 or 4 lb mono, but 8lb is fine.

It'll work, may not be optimum. But idk. (Best to test for yourself). They also make "smoother casting" line too

The only possible issue is casting efficiency or line capacity.

Otherwise just adjust the drag if you expect 8 lbs could break the rod

Edit: I've tried the smooth casting line (before I switched to primarily braid). And it absolutely made a difference. Put it on my inshore setup (10-15 lb test mono) and could easily cast twice as far as before

Also if braid will work for your applications its much much thinner and stronger. My 50 lb braid is 25% thinner then my 20 lb mono

You're problem is honestly more likely your rod and reel. A spinning reel with a lighter power rod will help you throw those light lures further

Use an open face spinning reel and a long rod to improve casting. The zebco push button are to get kids interested in fishing.

Well, i am glad others have posted criticism of any push button reels. I don't even recommend them for kids! If they were better engnieered, they'd be o.k. for everybody, but they aren't. Get an open face spinning reel.

You will eventually have to move there, anyway! Start any child out with spinning, if they are interested in fishing and are at least 5 or 6 years old they will learn how to master it. Fishing tackle should not be treated as toys! Just Sayin...RJS

I’m in total agreement with you Robert. I started with a push button but soon saw the problems and frustration with it - spinning reels for me. I would love to master the bait cast but just haven’t taken the time. Old dog here but not wanting to waste my time.

I use mostly open face spinning reels, but have used closed face plenty in the past. My wife uses one now (trigger spin). I don’t understand the criticism of them as I find them very reliable and easy to use.
