Gmjh,

Thanks for the tip. I have never even heard of ali express, but then again I don't get out much!

Is there a link to these Chinese braids? I presume you use ali express

I would go on E-Bay and search braid fishing lines. Pages and pages will come up. Quite a few are the same just color differences. Never had any problem with shipping or delivery. I just looked on Amazon. They have a brand called RUNCL PowerBraid. It comes in all different diameters and spool size. For comparison a 1000 yd spool of 60 Lb, is $36.88. That is a very good price. I believe that is cheaper than the Dyneema I was buying on E-Bay, and a much quicker delivery.

On my charter boat I used 70 lb, braid for all types of fishing. With 20 -24 reels to spool I could not afford the $65, plus price for 300 yards of Power Pro or Spider Wire. I buy dyneema brand braid off of E-Bay. Can be bought in all different colors and spool size. It has a coating on it as well, that did not last long in the salty water of S.F. bay. I like to mix up the color line on my reels, makes un-tangling easier.

Well guys. We got out on the water bout 0830. Was a little chilly but not too bad. Had the sheriff comin out behind us so had to go slow from the start where the kayakers usually are. Weren't any today but still kindof a no wake zone.
Anyway, we trolled from the get go and never got a bite for 5 hours. Then bout 130pm we hooked our first fish.
Landed it and it was a keeper so put it in the live well, bout 4 pounds.
Went back down river and started trollin back up and hooked another one but it was a short, bout 17 inches.
Released it and went back down and started upriver again but no more bites.
Trolled bout a mile upriver and decided to turn around and troll back through that section goin the other way.
Started goin down river and shortly afterwards hooked a 3rd fish. That fish was bout 5 1/2 pounds and in the live well it went.
Went back upriver and started down again. Hooked another one bout the same place, bout 4 1/2 pounds. Put it in the live well. It's now bout 2:15 and we decide to try to troll goin back upriver but nothing.
Turn around and are goin to make one last pass down river and then jet back to the dock.
Near the end of our run downriver we hook another one and Ben lands it and it's bout 3 pounds and that's our limit and we call it a day a little after 3pm.
Got back to the dock and loaded up the boat and filleted the fish and got home shortly before dark. Stopped at Brads house to give him the carcasses for crab fishin.
Decided to try out on the Napa again come Saturday.
All in all we didn't do too bad. Caught 5 fish in bout 6 1/2 hours. Total weight, 17 pounds.
All the fish came in the last hour and a half. Right after the high tide turned and started goin out.
Was a little windy but was really a beautiful day.
By the time I got home and cleaned and flushed the boat and put it away and I got in the house and turned the computer on I had been gone for 12 hours. Kindof a long day but worth it.
Well guys. We got out on the water bout 0830. Was ... (show quote)

Hey Saw,

I was thinking about you yesterday. Lots of wind over here. Same today. Would have been a real tough day here. Good luck on Sat.

Same in Washington. Now you might get to net a couple time a year. We also have the dang Sea Lions follow the schools up stream gourging on them like they do Salmon and Steelhead at all the barriers that stop the fish continuing on up stream to spawn. they get the big brood Sturgeon too. But some say they are so CUTE and won't allow anything done until forced to because the fish species becomes endangered then everyone pays. Sorry for the Rant.

We have the same "furbag" problem here in S. F. Offshore their numbers are pretty consistent with the past. They become a problem when salmon fishing as they will just swim along waiting for you to hook a salmon so they can steal it. Where their numbers have increased is inside the bay and into the delta. During the summer when fishing the bay with live bait they steal the bait off of your hooks. We would hook one or two a week but go through lots more bait. Where I have really seen their numbers increase is in the rivers of the delta. The delta is where I feel they do the most damage. They pick off returning salmon as they try to move up the rivers. When stripers spawn in the spring they are right there picking off lots of fish. As the salmon have dwindled over the last 20 years the furbags now catch catfish too. The big problem is man has screwed up the water system so bad that these opportunist seals now can chow down in any number of man made hot spots. We some how have to balance the needs of seals and the needs of fish. Doesn't seem that hard to do. But when no one is working on it, it sure won't happen.

Opah (or moonfish) off the Hawaiian coast. I've only eaten them and for me, the best tasting salt water fish I've ever had. A close second would be halibut--a few years ago a buddy from work and I were planning on a week long fishing excursion to Alaska, but due to uncontrollable, circumstances, we had to cancelđŸ˜„.

Every once in a while an Opah would show up off shore of S.F. We call them sun fish. Here they are considered very bad luck to bring on the boat or even touch. Needless to say I have never tasted one.

In Florida they are called dolphinfish. In Hawaii Mahi Mahi. In Mexico it's dorado. All the same fish, and the most common specie in it's temperate zone in the world.

So we listed our favorites to pursue. So how about a specie you have not caught and would want to. Sort of a "bucket List" for fish. Mine would be tarpon as #1, and probably peacock bass as #2. So what is your fish bucket list?

I commonly see advice like “throw 20lb braid on your reel”, but doesn’t that depend on your rod? For example - my Ugly Stik Elite says 6-14lb on it, so wouldn’t using 20lb braid mean my rod would break before the line? By that logic it seems I should keep it to 12lb or less

I would be more concerned about the size of the reel than the rod. Stress on the rod is determined by one thing, drag load. I myself fish with very little drag, so the rating on the rod makes little difference. The reason I say the reel size is important is that the same test braid will be thinner than mono. At one point I switched from mono to braid on my charter reels. I had run 30 lb. mono for years, with about a 300 yd. capacity. When I switched to braid, 30lb did not work at all. The line was too small of a diameter to work with the size reels. The upper wrap, when under load would pull down into the lower wraps and act like a small backlash and not let line run out. I talked to my reel repair guy who told me the only solution was larger diameter braid or smaller reels. Considering I had some place around 20 reels I was not going the reel route. So turned out that 70 lb braid was the same diameter as the 30 lb mono I had been using. Switched to 70 lb. braid and solved that problem. Most of my rods are not rated for that high of a test line, but never and I mean never for 10 years did I have a rod problem from that braid. When it comes to rod ratings I ignore that for the most part. I can handle a rod w/o a reel on it and get a good idea of how much it will take. We fish shark and sturgeon a lot, that need a strong hook set. My only concern with the rod is that it is stiff enough to transfer that hook set power.

This subject makes me think how NASCAR great Richard Petty was asked what is his favorite track. He answered "the last one I won on". I am going to take a page from Richard. What's my favorite fish to catch? Any thing that bites! I used to tell my charter customers that fish are like cars. Salmon/ striped bass are like race cars. Real fast and lots of horse power. Sturgeon are like semi trucks. Slower but lots of strength, and torque. At that slower speed sturgeon will "spool" your reel easily, and you can't stop them.

WOW! We won the first round of this contest by getting more votes than 'SWEET REDFISH'. Now we must vote again for Maryland's finest fish (Striped Bass) caught in the Chesapeake Bay one cool day in May on 'Wild Goose' with Capt. Dale Kirkendall out of Happy Harbor in Deale, Maryland to move to the next round. We are competing against 'MIGHTY BULL MAHI' which is a beautiful dolphin fish that will lose its color after it was caught, gaffed and photographed. That is why there is a lot of blood. I hope they had a fresh water wash down on board! Please vote for 'Big Rockfish' at: https://www.sportfishingmag.com/noaa-bracket-three between Wednesday, January 19 thru Monday, January 24. We will need a lot of votes to beat this young lady's bull dolphin. Please try to get your friends and fishing buddies to vote for 'BIG ROCKFISH' for bragging rights of Striped Bass Fishermen.

So those that vote for the Mahi Mahi, are they voting for the fish or the girl???

I thought it was starting this year as well. I think this new system will have little impact on us avid anglers. We all buy next years license as soon as they are available. It is more the casual fisherman that will benefit. The guy that may not fish till April, can buy a license then and not pay for four months of license when he did not even have it.

They said they didn't have enough time to implement it for this year and may not ever go into effect until 2023!!!! And still no thoughts of giving seniors a break on price. It's California and Newsom.

Fish and Game has fought this for years. I don't believe that time excuse. I think it is more of their resistance to the idea at all. They think they will get more license revenue out of the old system. It took an act of the assembly to get them to accept it now. This license for a full year idea has been around ever since DMV did it with auto registrations. F&G could have done this at any time but waits until the assembly forces them.

This is part of an attitude at F&G and the F&G commission. They pass more and more restrictive regulations on hunting and fishing. They balk at spending money to enhance fishing, and then wonder why licenses are not selling. Instead of going along with this license idea, and also spending money on making fishing better, they hire a P.R. firm to B.S. you into buying a license. This is called management in California.
