We've discussed this here before. I don't recall hearing from anyone that had actually been bitten. I wouldn't be worrying about snakes. I'd be worried about some idiot introducing the candiru into North American waters. If you don't know what that is, look it up.
The Candiru fish (Vandellia cirrhosa) is a small catfish purported to enter the, ahem, intimate orifices of unfortunate people who urinate into Amazonian waterways. Supposedly, the fish mistakes urine for water expelled from the gills of marine life.

Went down to Florida to visit my sister and fished a nice size pond behind her condo. Caught 10 bass on a Texas rigged Zoom lizard. Switched to a cotton candy wacky rigged worm an hooked a snapper. He spit it out when he saw me at the shore line. Tight lines all morning.
In got him a BassPro Baitcaster. It does have magnetic brakes. I got one that wasn’t terribly expensive (~$60), since he is trying to learn how to use one.
