Here in Texas I do a lot of river fishing using limb lines, trot lines, and drop lines . the law requires you to tag your line three feet from your first hook with your name address and date you set lines ( I also add my phone number) the date is good for ten days after that you have to pick up or move your lines to a different spot. The longest I leave lines in water is about four days checking them no less than twice a day. I like to fish during the week as fewer people are there. Less people ,less trouble more fun fishing. Fishing line, hooks, and weights cost a lot of money these days. I am very particular with my lines for this reason. You don't want to cut a line that is properly tagged for two reasons. First it is not nice to touch another persons fishing line and you don't know he may be watching. With that said ,if there are old lines that are no longer in use I would say yes you can cut them down. Please dispose of the old lines and hooks properly. Use common sense and be friendly when fishing.
