Fishy smell in the air

Hey everyone, I am 3 months new to Wilmington. I am located in porters neck. Today there is a fish smell in the air. It reminds me of fishing in New England when there where large schools of bluefish devouring the bunker. Does anyone know what the smell may be coming from.

The bunker/manhaden used to be canned for human consumption. There were canning plants ALL up and down the east coast. When I sailed down the intercostal waterway 30 years ago, each canning plant we passed still had a major stink around them, and that was around 25 years after the feds banned menhaden for human consumption. Maybe the stink is still there.!?!?

Somebody has to say it " fish farts ". But seriously we have had the same smell here on the Pamlico piratically and fishing was fantastic. Don't know what it is but not complaining.

In that area it would be either menhaden or a large school of mullet. Menhaden is probably spelled wrong. Were you in brackish water?

I don't know what the smell comes from but here in Rhode Island it smells like watermelon.

When fish are on the bed you can get a whiff of them. Usually shallow water and Bream and Blue Gills.

I am just up the icw in scotts hill. We have commercial fisherman around us with nets, fish juice and such.
