Does it make sense to own a saltwater fishing boat when I live 3 hours from the ocean?

Most of my family lives at the Gulf and I’ve spent a good portion of my life at the beach. Since I was little, I’ve always gone off shore fishing with my grandad on his center console. He’s getting older now and his health has declined greatly, so I don’t see many more trips in the future if any. I still want to continue fishing offshore and I’ve been too spoiled to pay for a charter trip.. Would it make sense if I bought my own boat even though I’d only use it 30-40 days out of the year? On top of that I live 3 hours away. But, I spend that much time there anyways if not more. What are your thoughts?

Most people that live 3 minutes from the water don’t get to use their boats 30-40 times a year. I don’t think distance from the water should be a factor. Just how much you will enjoy it and how often you will get the chance to.

That’s the plan. I’m 22 and I’m working hard to invest in real estate to earn passive income so that can come true. I manage investment projects for other people, just trying to learn more to start doing it myself.

You know the math! If you can afford it fine! A saltwater boat ((or any boat for that matter) is expensive and and sooner or later will need a lot of money dumped into it! I’ve had many boats in my life and learned my lessons! I’d say NO!

A boat is a hole in the water in witch you pour money into...…….. I have and still do own a boat which I use and pour money into all the time ...moneys well spent. Love to fish!

Yes and take your Grandad as much if not more than possible.

He's right: focus on granddad. You'll cherish the time spent.

So boats are a money pit. You know the old saying - the 2 greatest days of a boat owner is the day you buy it and the day you sell it. BUT - if boat fishing is your passion and you can afford it - then go for it.

Any hobby cost a lot! Most rewarding is outdoors in the fresh air! I say its a great investment and keep two boats around! So its a chore, so is yard work but not as rewarding! I`ll keep my old needs work boats and work on reels too! Wife still talks about old Squall King 1961 boat, how safe she felt in it till hit and run accident that finished off the old girl! What a sweet boat it was!

I grew up 5 min away from the beach ,and always had boats .And spent loads of money to fish them .But I wouldnt want to drag a big boat 3-4 hrs to and back to go fishing .What I would do is put an add out for someone who lives on the coast that wants to co-own or wants someone to go out with .I know lots of older people who own nice boats that dont have anyone to go out with them,or help keep a boat up.There are loads of boats just sitting cause people dont want to go out alone . I was a member of a boating club in Fl. that used boats that wernt used most of the time ,and we always had a nice boat to use when we wanted one .
