Always put mono under your braid. Acts as a cushion and lets you get a good tight wrap on your spool. The whole chunk of braid can actually spin on the spool if there’s nothing under it. Some modern reels have a rubber or plastic banding at the base of the spool for this reason.

Oh and I dunk my wading boots in a bucket with fresh water and a drop of bleach. Then spin them dry in the washing machine. They dry much faster that way. Just don’t tell my wife.

Nope. Rinse everything that got saltwater on it when you get home.Rod reel tackle etc. salt water will ruin anything that doesn’t get rinsed.

No worries. I always fill a bowl with lightly salted water and put the fillets in after washing. Makes a big difference. Take them out and pat dry. Freeze or cook without rinsing after the salt bath.

I’ve used them for weakfish when sandworms were too expensive/ hard to get. They turn white pretty quick but they worked.

I bought an orvis Clearwater couple years ago. I believe it’s a lifetime warranty no questions asked. Great rod by the way. I love it.

Awesome! I can’t see my dry fly in the daylight sometimes, I don’t know how you guys do it at night!

Definitely northern kingfish. ….close relatives to the “southern” whiting. Our whiting is silver hake. They used to come to the beach years ago in the dead of winter at night mostly. King fish are a common summertime fish for us.

Nice handy work there Chas304! I would rate you as a "PRO" lure designer and concept artist! You just might want to consider making a side line business of what you are doing, as I have not seen that type of creativity on the market!

Thanks yak! Been tying flies and making saltwater plugs for a long time so it was an easy thing for me. Already owned a lot of the stuff you need. And yes the the small ones are deadly for trout. Made a few larger ones and caught some bass as well.

I’ve been doing this for years. Got tired of losing $4 spinners. Came out to a little over a buck apiece once you got
Over the initial cost of bulk hooks, clevises etc. couple things. You can make nice tail wraps with round nose pliers made for bending wire. The homemade jewelry section of a craft store is a good place to look for them as well as other stuff you can use. But netcraft will have about everything you need. Also a tying vise of course and very important is a hook with a straight large round eye. The down turned eye hooks on most flies don’t work well with a spinner. Good luck and send a pic of that first fish with your creation!

I bought a field and stream tec-lite spinning rod from dicks sporting goods a couple years ago and really like it. I needed a short rod for bushwhacking. Around $50. Has micro guides which are a slight pain to string up but other than that it fishes well.

Redfish used to be common in nj. There’s old pictures of guys with large surf caught fish. They called them channel bass. Like turn of the century old. Bass river is named for them. Also sheepshead bay N. Y. , of course for sheepshead. Spanish have been showing the past few years on the beach, but historically not uncommon at all.
