I bought my first foreign truck in 1990. After 5 yrs of having nothing but a bike I decided to buy a truck. A Mazda extended cab 4x4 was only one I could afford. I looked at used Ford's n Chevy. Got a brand new Mazda cheaper than the used ones. Ford n Chevy got 15/16 mpg Mazda got 25/27. Had it 10 yrs n gave it to my daughter. Bought a 1995 f150 had 17,333 miles on it when I got it in 97.gave it to my daughter Jan o13 had almost 200,000 on it a couple yrs later it was still going. I now have a 012 Titan almost 218,000 on it. Can't afford another new truck 👍

Older used rigs now are nuts. I’m dealing on a 1985 suburban right now. I have a 1997 Chevy, one ton, 4 wheel drive dually with 110,000 miles on it. I paid $11,000.00 for it 10 years ago with 68,000 miles on it. It’s still worth what I paid for it and I’m giving the guy that and $8,000.00 for the suburban. The suburban is completely restored from the ground up and I think I’m getting a good deal. The Ford F-250 I want is $18,000.00. Sounds crazy but a new F-250, all plastic and electronic is $86,000.00. I paid $70,000.00 for our place in Idaho. I’m not gonna buy a pickup that costs more than 24 acres of land that the government can shut down with the flip of a switch. My 1995 Chevy 3/4 ton diesel has 200,000 miles on it and a guy offered me $7500.00 for it so I think it’s going bye bye. Good old truck but I know the old F-250 is way better.

Where's your spirit of adventure RJ. I hit the blacktop twice. Sober both time one was oil slick second was stupidity. Did a burnout tire hot grabbed n stood straight up. I didn't hit my head either time but did a belly slide. Not fun🤣

Catfish it is crazy that every day vehicles are worth more than you paid for them. Guess free money is easier to spend. I'll keep my Titan till she drops. Body still solid no rust interior still good drivetrain in good shape. Even new ones break down. BIL paid $70,000 2020 gmc. He has way more money than I do. I can put that kinda of money to better use👍👍

There’s that too. I rode for lots of years and never had an accident. Well not on a road bike. I also raced motocross and had a crack up or two there (I’m gonna blame that on Japanese engineering)🤪but never on my Harleys. When I moved to Oregon from Wyoming I could see the, complete incompetence in drivers there and got rid of it while I was still alive. Now, knowing what I’ve learned about Harley Davidson products and living in the mountains of paradise, I’m fairly certain my last road bike was my last. I drive Chevy trucks now but they’re too new. One is a 1995 and the other is a 1997. I’m in the market for a 1972 Ford F-250 and I’m already dealing on a 1985, restored, 3/4, 4 wheel drive Chevy suburban. Those will be my last vehicle purchases. I have a 4 wheeler, a side by side and two snow machines and I’m afraid I’m not going to admit what they are. I’m not going to look too hard at my John Deere tractor or my Bobcat skid steer for fear I might find a tag, on it, I won’t like. It’s getting tougher to be an American in more ways than one. 😂

Yes it is Catfish. Really sad part is poor quality of something that is actually made here.
I know unions started out with good intentions but they also created a group of people than thought they was better than the average working man. At least locally. Work 16hrs to turn out what could be done in 5 hrs easy. Some stole everything they could get there hands on. Not all was bad but enough to give unions a bad name here.

But that is about it.[/quote I bought a new Harley sporter in 82 or 83, was cleaning the spoke rims right in the middle of rim, made in Japan. Never again.

You may be right OJ. No never been there. Hard to tell who alls involved in these companies.

We had a Sportsman’s Warehouse built here…I went to their Grand Opening and walked the aisles. Beautiful store, but 99% of their stock was overpriced by at least 10%. They do well in places where they are the “only show in town”.

We had an outdoor sporting goods store which was started in WI called Gander Mountain, started about the same time as Cabela’s (in 1961 in Nebraska?). They each had about the same stuff and I would shop the sales and do my part to support both 😉. They opened stores around the region and supplied outdoorsmen and women successfully for 50 years (after they destroyed the sporting goods business at the anchor stores like Sears and Penney’s). Johnny Morris comes in with BPS and offers huge selections of everything. Gander struggles, so a guy named Marcus Lemonis swoops in as a “savior” , retools, liquidates their overstock and offers a full selection from new brands. On the way, he closed most of the existing stores, partners with Camping World and sets sail. Not sure if there are any Gander stores left, but the one closest to me is 100% camping to take advantage of the Pandemic (I presume).
Morris writes a check for Cabela’s and now has his Monopoly. His only real competition is Amazon. Wally World sells a few things, but nothing which compares. Not bad for a guy who started with a small set of shelves selling a few lures in his Dad’s liquor store in Springfield. My opinion, anyway.

OJ. I'm very familiar with Gander Mt. Sportsman warehouse in in the same Building now. When Gander went out I bought all kinds of gear. Then came gander outdoors. One of a handful that was going to remain open. They didn't n again I cleaned up. Then SW showed up. Johnny has done very well for himself. I was at bps every couple weeks. Spent a boat load of money then. I don't know about every store but when Cabela's deal went down this store changed. Prices went up n inventory went down. They dropped military discount to 5% better than none. I recently purchased a rod at SW same price as BP. The spring classic sale isn't near what it use to be either. Like I said but may be different in other locations. Here BPS n Cabela's are only 60 miles apart. I'm just glad I already have enough gear. It's all getting pricey. 👍👍 For camping world all of the one's near here are all camping also.

I suspect the kids may be taking over and jacking the prices, but I don’t know. You are correct, the Spring Classic is not what it used to be. I remember when I got my first BPS Master Catalog in the mail. That kept me busy for hours…just like the Sears Dream Book catalog before Christmas.
I am glad I have enough stuff as well. Not much of my gear is consumable, unless it is lost or destroyed by a fish.

When local bps opened I also thought I'd struck gold. They had one near Baltimore n I got my first t-motor there. It was near Chesapeake bay so not really bass oriented. The one in Harrisburg Pa is half mile from Susquehanna river. I got to be friends with several of the salesman. It was a great place. It started going down before anyone heard of covid. They covered their butt on real good deals by saying limited quantity or not available in all stores. Harrisburg was limited to one or two items or none. Alot of customers was pizzed off. Many drove several 100 miles to get there. Met two young fellows that drove 200+ to find nothing they came for. This was before Cabela's deal. I went there 3wks in a row to get the tubes I wanted. 2rd week they got 8 pks. I took six left two for nx guy. Last yrs classic wasn't worth going to. I went 2nd day n the good stuff was already gone. One new lure in flyer wasn't even available yet. Most of the guys I knew quit. Many times when founder steps down business goes down. Even Bug doesn't get excited to go anymore. She luvd their womens clothes. Last few trips they had nothing she wanted. Never did care that much about Cabela's. What really started my turn on Bps was the day I called n asked them about a left hand rifle. Guy said we have it. I said fine be there in 90 mins. Got there they didn't have it but they could order be 2wks. Season opening in one wk. I called Cabela's n they had 2 the guy assured me it would be there. Drove 60miles north n picked it up. At that time they had a better firearm selection than bp. I remember when sears jc penny Western auto n Joe's all sold everything. The good old days 😅😅

I do feel bad for the little guys, so I support the local bait shops whenever possible. Not sure how they can be $2-3 cheaper per lure than the big guys with all the “buying power” , but I suppose they don’t have the overhead and investors to worry about…?

I remember being told when young buy American… that was when we had a choice. But realize it was greed that drove people to want things for less money. Greed is greed. So both ends of this stuck on buying imported stuff now was greed on the Americans part.

American industry got lazy. Decided not to compete. So many great American companies shuddered. Sportsmen want lots of gear, cheap. No one's fault but those who keep buying Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc. Buy American, demand American, invest in American companies, promote American. That is the only way to slow the disappearance of this countries sports heritage.

I just got n email from sportsmans warehouse. Johnny Morris wanted to buy them also. Does he want to corner the market. Eliminate all compation? Who's next tackle warehouse Dick's maybe even wal mart. It's never enough for some. Since SW is only 20 mins from home I may do all my looking there. He's getting like phone carriers 👍👍

I have gone in there numerous times over the last 5 years and found even the most basic items unstocked on the shelf and no info when it will be back which doesn't help for a fishing trip in a few days!

What your saying now is what my Grandpas and Uncles said to me and other relatives then. But you know what happened. People here didn’t care about tomorrow. They wanted something cheaper right now. Something that will probably get better MPG on fuel. Only if the selfish way back then kept tomorrow in their plans.

I have only ever purchased or owned American besides my first car was a Baja bug 68. My rigs are all American. We bought a Dodge Grand Caravan as family vehicle. We bought one Toyota Corolla for her. She loved it and still does. My vehicles are Ford Jeep and GM.

Dirtbikes Quads and tractor…chainsaws log splitters are Japanese German and some Other countries of origin.
