This is the second winter I've taken a drive to Corpus Christi and Padre island to fish. First year I fished a Small marina at Cole park in Corpus Christi and caught my first Bull Red . This year I focused on the Packery Channel jetty's ! The sheepshead spawn was just starting and I spent a day asking locals the best way to catch one! The next day I threw some live shrimp with a split shot about 1 foot above a size 2 hook (straight shank)! Sure enough they loved the shrimp and I caught a couple! Very light bite, nothing like when a bass thumps your lure but they fight and pull like no bass I've caught! Maybe I need to catch some larger bass. Was nice to escape winter for a couple weeks, I just might head back to figure out more about the fishing there next month! Hope everyone is getting out to fish and enjoy some nature! Cheers from Denver

Hello. I’m a beginner in fishing. I talk to the worms when I have to “gently” break them in half . 😂. I fish with my coworker and we are looking for places besides Cherry Creek Reservoir and Harriman Lake(?, it’s near Red Rocks and the Federal jail), we stumbled on that. Also, bait and lures.
We are going fishing the is weekend. Can you fish at city park?
Thanks

You can fish at city park, I follow a couple YouTubers which is how I started finding places and learning! There are fish in most ponds around Denver area’

Welcome to Denver, I mainly shore fish from ponds in the area not quite large enough to justify a kayak but find lots of Bass! I took a small one man pontoon to a place I fish often but was lost as to where the Bass were in the middle. I don’t have sonar yet but if I had I would’ve been looking for any structure like rock piles and trees because that is where I catch them from shore. Hope someone chimes in about not being able to mark fish, I think seeing what the bottom looks like would help! Hope you figure things out soon , good luck!!!

We've read many Catch and Release debates here on the Stage and it made me think about my methods. I've gone deeper into this subject reading studies and statistical analysis of mortality rates. One controversial study concludes the mortality rate caused by tournaments is 40%. No doubt that study contributed to some of the changes in format we've seen lately. But, the data that is generally accepted and used comes from a metastudy (I think that was the name). A metastudy looks at all the studies that have been done to mine data. The mortality rate for largemouth bass from catch and release is between 18 and 19%. For every 100 bass released almost 20 will die! For Striped bass it is less than 6%. For trout, more than 20%. The duration and difficulty of the fight, time out of the water, and handling of the fish are identified as the biggest contributors to mortality.
All of this information is to help you understand why I decided 2023 is going to have a New Year's resolution to reduce my catch and release mortality rate. Here is a list of the things I am doing towards that goal.
1. 90% of my fishing is catch and release. The two live wells on my boat will be converted to storage compartments. One live well will be available to use for those times one is needed.
2. Experiment with barbless hooks to determine if using them 100% is possible.
3. Fish smaller than 2 lbs, every effort will be made to release it without removing the fish from the water. Small fish have less oxygenated blood and can get beat up pretty bad during the fight.
4. Fish brought on board will be secure in a net to prevent getting lose and flopping around the boat. Camera, pliers and anything else will be out and ready to use. I will touch the fish as little as possible, take pictures, and remove baits, quickly. Then. return the fish to the water as fast as I can. Allow the fish to recover inside the landing net in the water as needed.
Here is my thing...if I practice catch and release it just doesn't make sense for me to not do everything I can for my fish to survive. I want to do better than 18%. I hope that many of you will read this and decide to adopt my 2023 resolution to reduce your catch and release mortality rate.

You know a lot of people would say just stop fishing if you feel bad about hurting fish. How would you feel if something was smarter than a human and decided fishing for people was fun. I’d sure hope they didn’t use big hooks with barbs if they were able to trick me into biting! Put a pizza on a hook and you got me, glad I’m not a fish ! Using light line sometimes results in my hook and senko becoming fish lip jewelry, I hate that! It seems us humans just can’t leave stuff be, we gotta mess with something. I love messing with the fish, I can’t stop! People going to be people, some will shoot a fish with a bow and arrow with satisfaction. Others will handle the fish with gloves and rags to not hurt the fish with the same satisfaction! The key is being ok with your decisions and yourself! I used to feed the bass a minnow I’d keep in a pail of water after tricking them with my senko, it made me feel better about ripping their little lips apart. Ok I never did that but I am as careful as I can be with the fish I decide to trick. Thanks for being careful with the fish, Fish lives Matter!🤣🤔😳✌️🐠

Hey y’all. I’m moving to Colorado soon and as depressing as that cold weather’s gonna be, I’m excited about the change to get on some river smallies. If anyone is in the know about access points to any decent, wadable, water around Littleton, I’d be grateful. And if anyone wants to meet up once the weather allows, holler.

Tight lines…

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised coming from South Carolina. With it being dry here, the cold is much more tolerable as well the heat. I’m from MD originally and other than not having the Chesapeake bay, I prefer the summers in Colorado. In winter you’ll have to find moving water unless you enjoy ice fishing from frozen lakes and ponds January-march ! Welcome to Colorado and good luck finding the smallies Blue, there is good largemouth fishing as well. 🐠✌️

Bring some plastic swim baits and Texas rig them if you don’t want to snag up. Plan on losing some terminal tackle. Be really careful on those rock jetties, they can be pretty dangerous!

Thank you for the advice! ✌️🐠

Nice looking bows. Looks like a lotta fun. Are you fly fishing? I've been mainly on Chatfield. Had some rainbow fun up at Skagway one morning a while ago. I'm a spin fisher. Congrats on the bows. Maybe I'll try the river one of these nicer winter days we get around here.

Thanks, I’m slowly working my way towards Chatfield! I have been catching trout and smallmouth on spinning gear, 3” gulp minnows on 1/8 oz jig head or ned rigs. This river has been good to me so I’d say give it a try .✌️🐠

Has anyone recently fished the South Platte flowing through Denver, Colorado from Chatfield reservoir to REI downtown? How bad are the Homeless. What are the best spots and best flies?

I fished it today south of REI around the stadium! I’ve not fly fished so can’t help you with flies, something sub surface I’d think 🤔! Rainbow trout are very active today!!🐠✌️Good luck hope you catch some

Fished Frog Hollow, very dirty and Texas cars selling pot in the parking lot. Looked fishy so I conceal packed some heat. Ended up at REI. No fish but a great sunny warm November day with marvelous sites.

Ended at up at Gaylord of the Rockies for drinks before driving back to the springs.

I'd love to have a small flat at the confluence apartments in Denver. I could walk to REI and fish in the S Platte and fish every day.

I would never had thought to fish a frog there, maybe a rat!😮. Gotta have lots of fishing spots, one gets old. Colorado fishing is about over for me, heading to Dallas Texas this week and working my way to the coast to fish. Sorry ya didn’t catch any, I have best luck with 1/8 oz tube jig or ned rig! A small rapid starts just south of the rusty bridge in my picture, throw a tube jig in and let current do most of the work. Spinners can work also but I catch most on the jigs.

Awesome work! I’m trying to meet some folks to fish with around the Denver area. Having a newborn makes it tricky, but I’m always trying to get out whenever I can sneak away.

Fishing is about over for me in Colorado for the year, I’m not a fan of the cold anymore. Looking forward to next season though, maybe we can meet up at a spot sometime. Congratulations on your newborn, that’s pretty cool!

I'm fishing on the Platte Monday. Any other good spots? Carp biting? What flies? Ever used Angelers All fly shop in Littleton? I'm from the Springs and last fished there 5 years ago from a city park off Santa Fe on the river. Thanks.

I have only fished the section between 8th and the stadium using spinning rod! I walk along the Platte trail and find good holes near rapids. There are a a few fly fisherman I’ve met that we’re going for carp and I do see lots of Carp! Hope you catch some Monday! I caught this trout just north of 12th fishing a ned rig this week so the trout are still biting!!!!

as much as I would like to believe you are being truthful about the location where you claim to have caught these fish I must say, BS!!!! What do you have a condo near there where you watch to see how many idiots go try the river in downtown Denver. LOL!

You should keep trying and don’t give up, you’ll catch one from there eventually! I’m just really good at what I do!!😮🐠✌️

So I’m sorry you think only idiots fish the Platte downtown, and no I do not have a condo down town. I’ve seen a few other people fish there but most don’t catch anything. I’d show them how but I’ve learned not to help others fish unless they ask me! Have a good day or night and hope you are catching lots of fish!✌️🐠
