Tungsten is much denser so would be a smaller mass for same weight.

Sorry, lead is 13% more dense then tungsten. I taught chemistry for 7 yrs. The toxicity is the reason it is being banned.

the Palomar knot and the Trilene knot (99% strength) are double pass thru knots. Not so easy to tie on small flies. How about the Pitzen Knot? Its easy to tie, doesn't pull out and retains 89% strength. Rio puts out 10+ videos on how to tie knots and shows the strength test for each!

When i got back into fly tying 3 years ago I used an inexpensive Thompson vise. And had some difficultly tying flies. I asked your same question to several friends at our local TU Chapter and got the same answer from three of them. And I bought it. A Renzetti Traveler 2000 rotary vise. Today I think it was one of the best investments I've made. They are about $175. A decent rotary vise makes tying chenille, hackle, ribbing, etc. on a hook much easier. Especially some one like me with big hands and one who is not terribly coordinated. With it I can make beautiful flies. without it I would have given up tying. Today fly tying brings me great joy and accomplishment and its my favorite hobby. I can't tie as fast as they do in the youtube videos. But with a little practice my flies come out darn near perfect. Good luck!

Join Trout Unlimited and attend a local chapter meeting. the TU members can be very helpful in getting you set up and helping you learn to cast, fish and even fly tying. This is what we do at our local chapter. We have programs for scouts, other youth, women, Vets and anyone interested in fly fishing. Good Luck!

Red nail polish as the man suggested. Works for me.

I ask women i know under the age of thirty (friends and relatives) if the have any nail polish that they will not use again because they hate the color. You will get many colors including red that you can use for lures for free. Mean while, you will help them to clear off their dresser and make them feel good for helping you, to boot!

I only fish fresh water streams and lakes, and most of my rods (6') are two piece execpt for my fly rods (8" 6'') which are 4 piece. They are much easier to transport and store. All my fishing buddies have multi-piece rods. It's just too easy to snap off the rod tip when walking thru the woods to get to your fishing spot, when putting them in your vehicle, or even walking in the house. Once you've done it , you never want a repeat. It'll ruin even a good day fishing, I know. Good Luck!

Trout jump during a Caddis fly hatch, because they hatch and come off the water so quickly compared to other hatches. This would be my guess based on the limited info given. Using an Emerging Caddis pattern or skipping an adult Caddis pattern across the surface would be the ticket. Using a light fly rod setup, like a #4 Weight, would do just fine. It would help if you had a picture of the hatching insects. In the evening if there is a bright light near your pond/lake/stream it will attract them and you can take their picture on a surface such a car, building or lampost. I recommend that you slide something of known size into the picture frame to give you perspective. I usually use a dime or another coin as these are easy to carry with you and are of a known size. Then you can submit the pic with your question and we can help you with its ID. Also include the location. Knowing the lake/stream, city or town and state will help with the ID. Good luck!
