Nice fish!
Also realistically how hard is it to learn fly fishing on your own? I’ve been fishing for years but never fly fishing. I don’t know anyone who can show me and I’ve read about it online. Advice?

Youtube and your local fly shop!
April Vokey just did a recent podcast with her husband about buying your first fly rod. I didn't think it was overly informative, but did seem to deliver the message that the most important thing is getting a rod and putting some time on the water.

Thanks for all the replies. I figured it was going to be as simple as go out and practice but I figured it never hurts to ask. Happy fishing!

You can practice anywhere you have room to cast, so you don't even have to be at the river.
I went to my local fly shop and he set me up with an inexpensive beginners kit, I went to a casting clinic with the local club to learn to cast, and I caught two little trout my first trip out.

I’m quite lucky in that my boyfriend is super into fishing and I spent a a few days with him in the mountains where he lives & fishing from sunrise to sunset! I picked up the hang of it fairly quickly but I can see how it must be difficult to get good at! I also paid for a 1-1 lesson with a professional instructor recently which I found super beneficial I think :) but the instructor said it’s just practise and muscle memory. I’m by no means good but hope to practise a lot more and build the skill up :) Happy fishing!

Also sorry I don’t mean just muscle memory and practise, there’s lots of skill involved and learning how to read the conditions etc which I definitely need more work on!

Put a strike indicator on the line and let it drift with the current. Works just like a regular line and catches fish.

I kinda learned on my own but got better after learning not to horse the big fish in😂. Broke off so many giant browns.

Check with your local fly shop and let them know you want to get into it. I know orvis specifically has lots of beginner classes that are typically free, and they’ll give you a coupon for an entry level rod, reel, and line package. My local fly shop does a similar sort of thing. There are a lot of things you can learn online, but honestly learning to cast well is best learned by doing it and having someone experienced tell you what you’re doing right and wrong. I would take a free/cheap class, get some entry level gear that comes recommended, practice casting a bunch out in the grass with targets, then try your hand on a pond or easier river. If you have trouble finding out where and how to catch fish, you can do a guided trip and take note of where they take you, how you’re fishing, flies used, etc. then go back and repeat on your own

That is bigger than a "little" rainbow. That is a nice sized fish! Congratulations. My wife used to fly fish for bluegills. She loved it.
Nice, fly fishing great fishing sport, love it, relaxing. Wonderful to see a young lady with first rainbow. May you be blessed with many more.
Great catch! Welcome to the sport of flyfishing.
Enjoy every fish, as some days they're hard to find.
At the risk of sounding judgy, I encourage you to look into safe handling of fish that you are returning to the water. Trout are pretty fragile creatures and don't hold up to the kind of handling that many other species do.
Keep up the good work and have fun out there.
