I try not to use it unless the bugs are really bad, and then I try to get someone else to spray me so I don't get it on my hands. I have skunked myself a few times over the years by not being careful with it.

Good fishing!

Spray a long sleeve shirt and the pants with Cutters (15% Deet) or 15% Repell from Walmart. The 15% is safe for skin contact. The clothes even wet will still repel the Mosquitoes. Spray the socks and bottoms of the pants and no Ticks or Chiggers either. Learned that trick in the mountains of Arizona and New Mexico years and years ago.
As a side note, now that paper bags are back in fashion, always have one and some Silicon Glue/Permatex Gasket RTV when tent camping.
IF the tent gets a tear in it, tear the paper bag into 2 pieces that will cover the tear.
Smear the glue on both pieces on one side each and put one piece on the inside and the other on the outside, sealing the tear.
Now you don't have to go to town just to buy a new tent. At least until after you get home. LOL
The "patch" will stop both bugs and water from coming into the tent.
Spray a long sleeve shirt and the pants with Cutte... (show quote)

Be aware that most insect repellants are also FISH repellants. If you get any on your hands and bait, you probably won't catch anything.

We used to use them for Blowfish in Barnegate Bay when we were kids because we were afraid of getting bit by the bloodworms. Seemed to work just as well.

There are a lot of little sod banks along the intercoastal from Raritan Bay to Cape May wherever there is undeveloped land meeting the water.
There is a good patch along the South Shore of the Raritan Bay from Union Beach to Keyport if you feel like walking a quarter mile or more.
There is a another much larger area along Island Beach State Park and out along the north side of the Barnegate Inlet.
Most are only accessible by boat.

Depends where. Some areas are closed from dusk 'til dawn. I don't agree with the law sometimes, but there is usually a reason. I know of a few places that were closed because of littering from late night beer parties, etc. They were not closed because of fishermen, but had to be closed to everyone because of a few abusers. I make it a habit to clean up as much trash as I can carry on my way out of a fishing area so it doesn't happen again. We have lost too many accesses in the last 20 years.
Thank you for your posts Bands. I am recovering from a broken leg and can't get out yet. One of these days I will get to see you in person somewhere.

There are not enough wardens. There are too many poachers.
If you aren't doing anything illegal, why should you be concerned?
I cooperate, show them my usually empty bucket and thank them for their service.

Early spring is also the best time to access pickerel in real weedy lakes and ponds before the weeds reach the surface later in the year making presentation nearly impossible.

Finally got out to fish for some Stripers this fall. Caught a half dozen in the 30-34 inch range. Lots of fun!

I've been trying to get out there for almost 3 weeks, but every time I get a chance to go it is either raining or windy. I took Friday off of work and went down there to catch the falling tide when the wind was supposed to be 11 mph from the west and when I got there it was more like 15 mph from the east. I stood there and watched the whitecaps coming at me for 2 hours, then went home. Sooner or later I'll see ya on the water. Good luck.

Thanks! I have considered it and still have all my tying equipment.

I mostly use modified peanut bunker patterns touched up with different colored Sharpie markers to mimic the local baitfish. Two - inch Grass shrimp patterns also work very well down there because the native shrimp in the river are smaller than the bait most tackle stores sell. Third on my list would be Clousers for when I am fishing the channels and need to get deeper.

Iā€™m a relocated Jersey boy. I lived there for 50 years and moved to Ponte Vedra 16 years ago. I fished Hopatcong, Greenwood, the Newark Water Shed and all the lakes in Harriman often.

I'm still stuck here in Central Jersey, but my mom has a house down near Port St Lucie. I try to get there at least once a year to fly-fish the intercoastal in my kayak for a week or two. I'm not too crazy about Florida fresh water fishing. I would rather deal with sharks than gators. At least they usually stay in the water.

You might want to try Salt Water Fly fishing also. As I get older and my eyesight gets worse and my fingers get bigger and clumsier, I find the saltwater flies a lot easier to tie. Having a 40 inch snook on a fly rod is a blast. I can't tell you what landing one is like...

On the Water gives weekly reports for the whole northeast. I know they call it a Fishing Forecast, but like all other Fishing "Forcasts", it is more of a History Report. It should give you an idea what is going on in your area. Select Northern NJ.

Quickie Yak Repair - Carry a small roll of duct tape in a sealed container. I patched my sister's yak so I could use it for a day or two before I found a better fix. It lasted 3 months before I had to replace it. Now I make it part of my gear. Not a full roll, just a couple of feet left on an almost used up roll in a small plastic Tupperware or Zip-Loc container.

Especially since most runoff ponds are from parking lots with God knows what leaking from the vehicles that frequent them.

It has been my experience that the meat in hatchery trout is white, and the meat in a wild trout is dark pink to orange.
