Yesterday, I found a few amazing little fishing spots with unblemished bass. They were in the very back of a remote SFWA. All it took for find them was a long hike through very tall grass. I haven't lugged my kayak (a sweet little Payette by Lifetime - super squeaky & noisy, it's frustrating but it's light) through an area quite this dense before.

Well, fast forward a few miles, more than a few bass, and a few hours later. I was wiped. Headed back. Stopped & bent down to tie my shoe, and noticed tick #1 on my ankle. Yuk. He was removed, and the slog continued another good mile or so. Back to the truck, back to the driveway, and as I was telling my wife the tale of the day, I got to the tick part. She said:

"You better take your clothes off and check everywhere."

"Oh yeah, gee whizz, OK dear!"

I laughed, and as someone who finds full frontal nudity hilarious, ripped my pants off right in the kitchen. I looked down and noticed a new spot on my thigh... tick #2 was starting to burrow. Yuk. He was removed. My wife, now thoroughly grossed out, said:

"You better toss those boxers and check EVERYWHERE..."

"Ha ha ha, OK sure dear. There is no way there is anything THERE."

I dropped 'em, still laughing.
She pointed and gasped:

"THERE'S ANOTHER ONE!"

I made a skeptical face. You see, my wife and I like to jerk each other around. She has become quite good at busting my chops after many years of marriage. This was the perfect setup. Too good to pass up.

"Oh yeah, sure babe, I'm not falling for that, there is no way t-"

I looked down.
There he was.
Right where she was pointing.
Tick #3 was right on my unmentionables.

"GAHHHH!"

Fellas, I do not startle easily, but in that moment my life flashed before my eyes.

Removal was traumatic, but thankfully, relatively painless.

And so, my brothers, I stand before you today asking for your advice - because I have to go back. These bass were unbothered, eager to hit topwater, and I lost one much bigger than the largemouth in the pic below. Would you please do me a solid, and share your best advice for avoiding ticks? Especially if you drag a kayak around in tall grass like this from time to time as well.

Thank you.

P.S. - I also managed to put a hole in the bottom of my yak, so after ALL OF THAT NONSENSE, my fishing time was cut short. If you have any tips on "yak repair", please advise. Thank you.

If you choose to replace your kayak, you might want to check out Tractor Supply if you have them in your area. Lowest prices i found on Lifetime kayaks. Also Academy Sports and Outdoors has a nice selection at good prices.

We have plenty of ticks around here in the long grass and trees. My go-to was always Deep Woods Off, but my Son swears by Sawyer Premium insect repellent for clothing, gear and tents (with Permethrin). Spray it on your clothes and let it dry. It is supposed to last for 6 weeks, or 6 washes. It is supposed to be good for chiggers, ticks and skeeters! Tuck your pants into your boots (or socks).
Send a picture of your kayak and we’ll figure out the repair to get you back after those bass!

Yes it's worth it just put your pants leg in your boots and tie them up good or put wader's on them take them off when you get to the water πŸ˜‚ but in Florida I fish some water holes way back in the cow pastures were you got to fright off the gators and cottonmouth, what we do for a LMB πŸ˜‚πŸŽ£πŸŽ£πŸŽ£
Have a good day buddy, and I'd tell the wife that it might be a good idea to check her for ticks also since you brought them in the house πŸ‘

You're story reminds me of a day many years ago when two friends of mine and I hiked out through a good distance of prairie grass to get to a small lake where there were a lot of large bass. The only difference was instead of ticks, the grass was infested with chiggers. Those little buggers bite and itch everywhere. The only suggestion I could make is s[ray DEET on everything you wear before you put it on. Boots, tucked pants, taped around the boot tops, long sleeves, tape around the cuffs might be enough to keep them out.

I worked my way through college surveying, much of which was in the out back of south Alabama. Each night before I took a bath I (single at the time) gave myself a once over using a Mirror. Found them under my arms, on legs, at the top of my butt crack, in my hair and generally on soft skin. Back then, I will be 75 next week, there was little one could do but check often and, as mentioned, close up the pants legs.

Red bugs (ciggers) were just a cost of being a surveyor. Had them most of the time in summer. I learned to avoid tall grass when possible.

Thank you guys for all of the responses. Here's the plan I think:

1. Purchased some permethrin spray for the yak, my gear and pants / boots.
2. I plan to tuck (pants into socks, not the other current meaning of that word...)
3. I gotta go back. I can't stop thinking about those unbothered bass... so hopefully if I strip when I get back to the truck, and take other steps, I can remove any hitchhikers... hopefully...

We'll see!

You could try a tick collarπŸ˜‚

Just be careful. Remember ticks are the source of Lyme Disease.

Now the part that's no joke...Lyme disease, and it is common to get it when you get bit by a tick, and they do not have to be there long enough to be imbedded.

Look for a little red ring around the bite, that's a good early warning. If you start feeling like you are coming down with a cold or flu get tested because antibiotics will get rid of it. I have known people who end up sick for months and not had it diagnosed.

Then as if this is not bad enough there is a new version that is in several states that will kill you, it has even worse effects.

Hope you didn't get bit by a bad one, but if you did it's better to be aware.

I would also recommend waders. Whenever I'm getting out of the boat over on the Napa I put on my hip boots, and spray OFF on them and my clothes. It certainly help keep the ticks off your clothes.
However, you still need to check when you get back to the truck to make sure that you are tick free.

Thanks for the heads up - I hope so too - they were dog ticks thankfully but it looks like they can carry some stuff as well. Will keep an eye on it for sure. I agree, it's no joke!
