The weekends are crazy go to the river to fish during the week not bad . We rent a cabin for a week every year now going on forty years. When we were young my dad managed the old hotel and my mom worked in the resturant now my daughter and niece take there boys there 6 boys all just one year apart 22to 17 so we sort of know the good fishing holes we have had some great days there this year was a real good one and the lake is still high the campground was only about halfway full from Monday to Thursday then filled up but not a lot of boats on lake.

Pinecrest lake is high not completely full water good temp planted well fished four of the seven days there with my grandsons they also fished alone and we limited all days 5 trout rainbow 10 to 16 inch fish used garlic power bait and did make a difference. I used the pink first day for about 2 hours and one fish switched to garlic and then there was plenty of action. We also fly fished the river below the lake at strawberry and plenty of fish small though we released those but still fun big one there maybe 14 inches if interested will tell you exactly where we fished. We had a canoe but most of the time we fished off bank grand kids made a swing off the redwood tree and were jumping in lake the dogs were swimming and it did not bother the fishing nobody around use were doing to well a fish here or there. Great fun for my grandkids they range from 16 to 22 my sister even caught a limit

I have fished the delta for many years. Not fishing right now but when I did three years ago it was around Antioch my son in law and myself had a boat 21ft we fished off we would sometime use perch for bait and drift fish other times we used rattle traps on the tides or in the sloughs pretty successful and then the standard baits cut anchovies, live mudsuckets were also very good bigger stripers have to have patience with them. And shad are very good. We also had good luck with a splitter feather jig white with red head followed with Brocken back rebel slow trolled. Not much happens when the tides change and we found out the bigger tides the most action. We fished beathal island with rattle traps at dusk some time and it was really fun if there in there this is the time for about another couple weeks then summer is usually slow for stripers till maybe September then the fall run starts. Summer time the Bay is best and the beaches hope this may help.

I want to thank everyone for there feedback and I’m going to try the braid as I said I’m older now and want better toys. Rods and reels when I was a young lad my mother would take my sister and me to Santa Cruz ca. And we each brought a friend we were maybe 14 and 13 She taught me to fish and we fished off the pier . She would buy any bait that she saw someone catch a fish on those days it was uaslly sardines and anchovies. But if someone caught a fish on shrimp we got shrimp and we used the jigs the small hooks with colored thread the use the small fish as bait on those days you could catch snapper and some cod off the pier and lots of king fish and sand dabs lots of fun we would fish all day we also had a crab net out

I have a new reel and want to buy line for it.I have looked at Dicks, and Bass Pro shop monafilament line can run from 7.00 for 1200 ft to 120.00 braided line runs double and triple that. I in my older years I’m 80 now have tried to upgrade my fishing rods and reals and passed my older stuff to my grand kids mostly trout and bass poles but now I’m starting to get onto surf fishing have two rods and reals but no line yet so my question how much difference will it make fishing the surf in Monterey and Santa Cruz any advice will help me decide what line to buy

I was in Newport oregon late August stayed at the embargadero this is right on the river where the boats are docked they have a charter company there we saw the halibut crab combo come in when we were there they can only fish certain number of days for halibut they had the limit for both that day it was a extra 15 dollars for the crab we had a one bedroom overlooking the docks for 140.00 really nice four people could fit more I guess if you had Sleeping bags they let you cook your crab and use there traps they had the real big ones I would think if you had a boat you could rent a slip also had a big parking lot and docking we parked in garage. You should have a great time keep us informed on what your plans are as I might be interested I have stayed there twice now they are real nice units kitchen and living room also pet friendly
