I remember the days fishing with my son at Rice Lake in Canada for bluegills. Some of the greatest days of my life!!!! If you want to get a youngster interested in fishing just take him to Rice Lake. My son aand his two sisters
learned so fast and they still talk about those days!!!

If you want to take a trip and catch some really nice perch plan a trip to Rice Lake in Canada. Rice lake is 80 miles northeast of Toronto. After you are settled in ask the landing owner how to get to the railroad tracks. You will be fishing in 10-12 feet of water and with wax worms or pieces of a nightcrawler, you will catch some nice perch anywhere from 8-10 inches. It has been several years since I fished it last after you have all the perch you want to start catching some nice bluegills. My family finished it for 14 years until we got too old to make the trip!

I have a two wt. 9 footer and I love fishing for bluegills with it. There is a problem when you get a slab bluegill on you can't lift it over the flags, you must beach it rather easily! But isn't that a BIG problem!!!!

I bought the 9ft two-weight while fishing in Flippin Arkansas and I can't remember the name of the dealer.
It is one sweet rod but you have to learn how to use it properly. It is Graphite and is really smooth, and boy can you cast out the line.!!!

When I go fishing I take my fly rod (3wt.) that I made myself, with the reel I have had for God knows how long.

And I think I catch as many fish as most of the guys and gals on this stage!!

We live in Palmetto and fish the gulf. Out past Anna Maria Island. Usually in 50 feet of water and catch White Grunt. Great eating and no size limit. Welcome to the Stage!!

I will soon be 89 years young! I have fly-fished on the Gunnison River in Colorado, also many years on the PM in Michigan, and many many years on lots of rivers in Ohio and Indiana, and many fishing days in Mountain Home Arkansas, always wading in chest-high waders.

Needless to say, that kind of fishing is no longer possible for me. My balance is bad but, since moving to Florida, I have a lake I can still fly fish. I have learned to fly fish sitting on a lawn chair with no real problems. I am still catching largemouth bass with no difficulty at all. They are all released to fight again.

Don't give up guys there is hope in the future!!!!

I more or less taught myself how to flyfish. And through the trial and error episodes, I have learned well enough to catch fish.

I wrote a FAQ back in 1995, and I think it may help you get started.

www.uky.edu/~agrdanny/flyfish/wwfaq.htm Try this and see if it is what you are looking for.

It has been some time since it was written and you can't use the e-mail at the bottom.

My e-mail is e.hall70@yahoo.com

Hope this helps.

Having been born in Hillsboro, just up the road, I don't remember ever catching many flathead catfish. But boy we sure caught tons of the best-eating Chanel Cats! I remember seining for small fish in Rocky Fork Creek to use for bait to catch most anything that was swimming in Rocky Fork Lake. Never seemed to get "skunked" whatever we were fishing for. What we seined was natural food the fish in the lake.
Before they built Rocky Fork Lake, I can remember fishing with my Dad by coal oil Lateran light on Rocky Fork Creek. It was our time together and that's where I learned to eat sardines from a can! Seems we caught a lot of Carp that were snow-white living in that clean clear water. And if you were really hungry, then you could eat them, if you cooked them right. We didn't keep many carp, but we sure had plenty of Chanel Cats.

Sorry about the old story, hope this helps you catch some shovelheads, at least that was what we used to call them!

I was working in the local grocery store the summer I turned 14. That was in 1946. I worked that entire summer at the store for, I think 45 cents per hour. I saved as much as possible out of each paycheck. It took that entire summer to save enough for the purchase of the fly rod I wanted. It was a split bamboo, three sections and I can't remember the make of the rod or reel. You can't imagine how hard it was to put back part of your check each week especially when you were 14!!

The cost was an enormous amount of money. $25.00, in 1946, you felt like you were rich!!
I'll do the math for you. That was 75 years ago!! I gave it to my Grandson Just this year and he was astounded
that I had kept it that long. I don't think he will ever fish it because he doesn't want a chance to break it!

Thanks for listing to an old man ramble on!!

All I know is he was very upset when he saw the trout floating belly-up in the next day or so.

I won't use corn...there are too many good fly patterns. From all the repones to the question
there so many good ones that I will have to try if I ever get back up north. Don't see many in
southwest Florida but sure do enjoy fish the Gulf.

Sorry I stirred up a hornet's
nest with the corn issue.
