My son called me up and asked if I wanted to go fishing for Father’s Day last Friday evening. I was surprised and happy to join him and my granddaughter at the pier.
He’s 49, my only child, and the last time we fished together was 30 years ago when he told me that he didn’t like fishing.
Well, it turns out that he caught the fishing bug along with my granddaughter. The tide was almost dead low so our chances were slim. My granddaughter and I got skunked but he managed to catch a blue and a sea robin.
AND he wants to fish with me regularly. 👍
Another guy snagged a line with a bluefish on one end still attached to a rod and reel on the other. I guess the blue pulled the unattended pole in the water.
Never saw that before!!!

What a great Father's day surprise. Happy for you. I once warned a friend about his unattended pole. Yep. A redfish swirled around his popping cork, it went under and the rod was gone in a flash. Probably still going.

Awesome surprise gift Mark, that's great!
Back in the day we were chunking Big Chopper Blues off of Hammonasset. My marina buddy had a boatload of greenhorns with him, and he stood his rod against the gunnel to gaff some fish. I had a clear view of his rod and reel launch over the side like a missile. Needless to say we couldn't find it. The following weekend as we were getting ready to go out, one of the nightfishing Striper guys was coming in. We asked how he did, and he held up Frank's rod and reel. Apparently he snagged it while trolling the rip at Meigs Point. No fish on but Frankie was a happy camper to get his setup back.

Reminds me of a bobber i saw floating along the shore line once. Paddled on over to retrieve it and it moved a little ways away from the sure. I moved again and it went under and came back up about 20 yards out. Headed that way and never saw it again.

Caught a really nice flounder one day chasing a cork. Kept throwing my grub until I hooked the line below the cork. Reeled em both in.

I thought of doing that, but once it disappeared all bets were off.

Your story reminds me of a long time ago I was fishing on a pier in San Diego bay and a guy left his rod unattended and a pelican caught his line swimming by and pulled his rod in the the bay and I threw my jig with a swim bait on it and snagged the line and retrieved the rod and reel and was able to get them back up the pier for him all intact and did’nt even get a thank you, what graditude!

You can't teach humanity to a self-centered in individual. There seems to be a lot of that going around n they are corn feeds who haven't worked a day in their life. Thank you isn't said at most of the stores.or your welcome by customers. Rods and reels are nothing to the man that doesn't work to pay for it.

I got the fishing bug due to a job kindly grandfather. It was like hunting I could do both by myself. I participated in team sports like football, basketball and baseball. But to enjoy nature I fished and hunted alone. I've probably released more fish than most or given them to retirees. I've given game away to needy people and let more deer pass under my gun than I care to remember. Enjoy the time outdoors as our days are few.
