Fishing in Lake Havasu has been good not great as far as large mouth bass fishing goes but it is starting to warm up water temperature wise so it should get better in the next few weeks.
Last Saturday - Sunday I picked up nice three and a half - 4 lb Largemouths drifting with the Yum Dinger Cranberry worm. I had it rigged wacky with no weight and today I decided to go with a 3/8 oz drop shot so we'll see how it goes for this weekend.
It's supposed to be 85 to 90° the next few days with little wind so looking forward to great time in my kayak
We headed to Lake Mohave on Thursday just above Bullhead City / Laughlin for a few hours of kayak fishing at Katherine's Landing. The breeze was starting to kick up as it does get windy there, trolling a square bill I hooked into this nice two and a quarter pound Smallmouth. Saw a few more in the crystal clear water and just an enjoyable morning out in Arizona sunshine.
Hey Saw, we started Dec 31st in Tokyo for a week, then Bangkok and Chiang Mai in January,. Spent the month if February in Kuala Lumpur and then back to southern Thailand to several islands. Koh Samui is the best, great beaches and food. It's just an area we love and will do it again this winter. The cityscape is from our 20th floor of our condo in Kuala Lumpur - Petronas Towers in the center.
My wife and I have been in Southeast Asia for the past 3 months and got back to Lake Havasu last week with some bad jet lag with 16 hour time change. So I got the kayak out and was fishing the past 3 days and skunked a few times but today got my first large mouth drifting a purple plastic worm and this guy kind of hooked himself. A good fighter and got me so wound up that I dropped my needle nose pliers overboard as I went to unhook him. Beautiful spots on him - a 2 1/2 pounder!
I was close to the launch ramp coming in to Mesquite Bay and did some casting in three feet of water and saw a big bass follow my crankbait up to the yak. A second cast got him hooked and he was a good fighter, got him up to the boat and he broke off my leader and swam away with my crankbait. But a great day and beautiful weather in the mid-70s in Western Arizona.

Nice bass and an encouraging story about our winter fishing here in Havasu.
Yes KC I went to the same spot this morning in very sunny conditions and never had a hit in the tule area but I started casting near some docks at the launch ramp. Had a huge hit with a big fish and got him about halfway in and lost him and then either he or another bass came after it and grabbed the lure and stayed on for a couple of feet as I'm watching this all through 6' of clear water. So that kind of made my morning!

Nice catching Langer. The Crankbait is working.
Thanks Fred, with a big full moon I'm happy for any kind of bite. I normally don't use this yellow color in crankbaits but it sure worked yesterday. With a very cloudy morning they were loving it but as the sun soon broke out, it all stopped.
I have the best luck with what they call a lime blue that probably imitates a bluegill. These are Ozark Trail lures available at Walmart for $2.16, can't beat that!
After being skunked quite often in my kayak the past few weeks I went out at 11:00 this morning to a 61° overcast day here in Lake Havasu at Windsor Beach. Casting a yellow crankbait into the tules not far from the launch ramp and at Havasu State Park I had one bass hit and lost him halfway to the yak. Within 30 minutes I landed three Largemouth to a little over 3 lb and a fantastic morning of fishing.
What a shock for winter fishing where the water temperature has dropped down to 54° and most Largemouth have gone a little dormant. Casting right up to the tules and bringing it back to my kayak I was in about 5-6 ft of water and the action was hot for a while, so a great day on Havasu.

TO BAD HE DIDN'T RELEASE IT BACK! BUMMER
Yes I agree completely and he put it back in the water and tried to run some water through its gills but it was just too late. He had little bit of movement in him but he had been out of the water for over 3 hours.
Yippee I finally caught a few Largemouth this morning! Bass fishing has been tough the last few weeks for myself and I think most of the Anglers here at Havasu but doing well with Stripers if they can locate them. Some are coming in with some big 8-9 lb fish. But Largemouth have been difficult until this morning when I launched my kayak at 10:30 at Mesquite Bay. Beautiful sunny 75° Arizona day with no wind, did some trolling for stripers and finally stopped in some tules and did some casting with my Square Bill. I caught two Largemouth 1- 1.5 pound and paddled back towards the launch ramp around 12:30 to catch one more in the reeds.
Best fishing story is as I arrived a guy was just pulling out at 12 ft aluminum row boat and he asked me what type fish he had in a bag. He thought it was a small mouth but when he opened it up it was a huge humongous Largemouth at least 6 lb maybe pushing seven and the biggest fish I've ever seen in person here at Havasu. He also caught it on a deep diving crankbait at 6:00 in the morning still in the dark which is way too cold and early for me!
He took it home for dinner.

Every one I get is because I attract them. Fast moving shining lures - especially like light color eel lures. I think trolling wouldn’t be very productive in a kayak for them.
If you troll a lure that looks like a Shad through a school of stripers you will catch one. When that happens I'll stop and cast back into them and typically can catch several. The problem in a big lake is finding them which I've been out the last few days, I haven't seen a Shad boil or a striper so have been skunked in a couple of hours that I go out in the morning.

Langer, what is biting in Jan/feb? I am heading back down then and am bringing my fishing gear. Not sure if I should bring striper gear or panfish gear. It seems I should try the site 6 dock???
If you'd like to spend some money hire a local guide and go out with them and learn the tricks in the spots. They're very successful right now going after Stripers mainly. That period in January and February the water temperatures are dropping down into the high 50s and a lot of things are going dormant.
Without a boat best bet would probably be off the docks and nightcrawlers or cut anchovies probably would work best rather than lures. I've watched an older lady pick up two smallies as I've been down at Site 6 dock this week as her husband catches small bluegills with crawlers and she baits 'em up and caught some nice smallies in 10' of water. She fishes 6 days a week and catches fish!
I head to SE Asia for 3 months in winter and come back when it warms up. Leaving December 31st.

Nice fish Mr. Langer. At least you didn't get skunked. I got skunked yesterday fishing at site 6 but I saw a gal catch a 2 pound bass near me. Nice day to be on the lake!
Our weather has been very nice especially in the afternoon but I'm usually out of there by 1:00 or so. Went to Mesquite Bay this morning about 10:00 and trolled down to the sandbar South and never had a hit. Stopped and did some casting and some tules and again no action at all so bass disappeared for now.

Nice Striper Langer. Have you ever tried dragging a Lipless crankbait, like a Rattletrap? Saw has great results with them in Cali. Thanks for sharing buddy.
Thanks Fred,
I'll give that a try I do have one in my tackle box nice and silver would imitate a Shad. I'll try it today.
Bass fishing has been tough the last few weeks, for me anyhow but I do see a lot of stripers being caught on Facebook. Constant postings of good size fish but it seems I had my best luck the month of October rather than November. I was in my kayak this morning at site 6 on the island and got skunked in about two and a half hours of trolling Square Bills and a deep diver crankbait. I did pick up this 2 lb striper on Wednesday but still trolling hasn't been all that great for me recently. You can see he was hooked well but they came out easily and released him. I just love being out on the water in my yak!

When is a good time to fish lake Havasu from shore? And what location? I visit family there frequently and would love to take a break and fish a bit
There's several large docks you can fish off of out at Site Six on the island, also Mesquite Bay has two different docks you can fish from. Spring and early summer seem to be the best times for fishing for all types Bass, Stripers, and Sunfish. I fish out of a kayak 4-5 days a week, enjoy being out of the water. It's getting chilly especially in the mornings. But it was nice and warm by 1:00 today, mid-60s with no wind.
