i've used the " no refrigerator" worms from walmart and if you buy them, put them in the fridge.
I liked the old fashion worms a lot better.

I haven't used any top water lures as of yet, I don't think I have any. I had a few when I lived in the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo. I use to bass and catfish around there, but the drought lasted so long, the lakes got down so low, they all had fish kills. No oxygen in the water, so i'd drive 140 miles up to Clayton Lake in New Mexico and fish for trout. I like Clayton Lake. we'd come up to Red River on our vacations and fish the different rivers and lakes. So after welding for the city of Amarillo for 33 years we moved to New Mexico and now live close to where we use to vacation. And I haven't used beetle spins here. The stocked trout will hit plastic if it is fished like you would power bait, but it seems to me, if you use to much of a lure they won't hit it

I have so many trout rods I don't think I can even count them. wife rods, daughter rods, guest rods, big river rods, small river rods, bank fishing rods, boat fishing rods. A lot of them I picked up at clearence sales. But for myself I like Fenwick and Berkley rods the best. Shimano use to make some rods that i thought were great rods, and I think that the Shimano Spirex Reels are the best to use on the rivers. I like to buy them on ebay to get the older ones because I think they are built stronger.

I would load the reel with Berkley Vanish, a fluorocarbon line 6 lb. depending on the size of the river your going to fish. The Shimano Spirex 1000 on the lighting spinning rod will be killer, in my opinion. Fenwick also has good rods for spin fishing rivers, but at a little more money.

Lighting Rods are a great choice. 5' 2piece light or 5'6'' 2 piece light. And a Shimano Fast Cast spinning reel. This rig will cost close to a hundred dollars tho. The reel will be at 60 dollars and the rod will be around 40 dollars.

hello, I'm a trout fisherman and when i'm headed to the river, I have panther martins on my mind. The one with a gold blade, black with yellow dot body. THE PANTHER MARTIN. I also use the one with an orange blade, and gold ones mostly. But trout get choosy and i keep a large selection of colors. For the lakes, if I'm bank fishing, I have to go with power bait mostly. I also keep several colors of that. For trolling, I'm liking Berkley Gulp Minnows, behind a dodger.

I agree on the Berkley Trout Bait. Most lakes have some kind of other fish in the lakes, and fishing with worms can really get to be a hassle, they always seem to beat the trout to the worm. lol Also, I wouldn't fish with a cheap line if I could help it, besides your bait, your line is the most important, and I feel you should always use a quality line, because you should always be ready to catch a large trout, not that you can't land a big one on cheaper brands of line, but as for me, I always except to catch the big ones. lol

Are you talking about walking down to the Rio Grande, by way of the lower Red River going down from the fish hatchery ? If you are, I have gone a little ways, but not all the way to the Rio Grande. Both times that I've been that way, the current, or water flow was so strong, it was hard for me to fish. I haven't been down there in the fall yet, but will make it a point to do so. I heard at work today that the fishing derby at lake Maloya was going on, I meant to have some fun fishing that, but I'm not going to get the chance this year. Maybe next time. You know browns come up and feed on those stockers at the hatchery, but they sure seem hard to fool. I haven't caught a decent brown in a long time. School is out now, so the rivers will be full of fishermen. Years ago we did hike down the Wild Rivers Park (or what ever that is) to the Rio Grande a couple of times. I think that was sometime in the early 90s. lol A few summers past.

I live in New Mexico also, about 10 miles from lake Maloya. So thats where I spend most of my fishing time.
I retired from the City of Amarillo after welding there for 33 years. I started fishing in 1988. Coming up to this area, to fish around Red River and Questa. Right now I'm trying to learn how to troll. Right now I use a 3/4 ounce gold hammered spoon with a bait about 24 to 18 inches behind. We have caught a few good ones around 14'', but mostly small ones. I'm talking about trout. I did better last year from the bank, catching several trout from 15 to 19 inches long. Caught one 25 1/2 inches long. The best one last year.
The large ones I caught on green power bait and berkleys floating worms, brown and pink. My frying pan has a slot limit, 14 to 18'' fillets fit real nice. And taste great. Although I had all kinds of fun catching these trout, I did find out that catching good trout is not all fun and games, I had to buy a freezer to put them in, and give my neighbors several. LOL
I like fishing the Rio Grande also, south of Toas or at john dune bridge. I haven't done very much there but I know the potential is surely there. The best fish I've caught in N.M. was a 24'' male brown at almost 8 lbs. in the lower Red River south of the fish hatchery. That is a storie all in itself.
well nice visit, and I hope to hear from you guys. God Bless
ps. At lake Maloya, you may have to scare off a bear from your fishing spot. They are very quite. Some areas in N.M. best to carry a pistol with you.

A lot depends on the situation. Is the lake clean or is there heavy weeds in the way of bringing the trout to the bank. the lighter the line that the bait is on, the more and bigger fish you'll catch. People do catch fish on big line, but it's been my experience that trout do learn, and the smaller the line you use, the more likely you are to catch not only more trout but the smarter bigger ones. Unless they starving.
