Yes it is. Let’s hope the weather breaks soon.
Hello and welcome OF. I fish many spots around port Mansfield- arroyo city - SPI. LOTS of fun Waiting for weather to change. I ended up mounting trolling motor to my yak so I could cover more area and not fight wind and currents so much. I still go by myself but would always welcome a partner. krm0677@yahoo.com.
Yes it is better. Some ( most ) paddles have a notch in them to slide down the line to the lure and help pull the lure out when you are shallow. Be careful though, it can be a little challenging in swift water.
There are some piers and docks you can fish off of in port Isabel, south of port Isabel and at the county park in arroyo city. Don’t know if you are able but my answer to the same problem was to get a kayak. I really enjoy it Takes some learning but well worth it.
If you are young and strong..go big ! If you are old...older like me I’d start small. I have a ten footer that I use a lot around south Padre island. Weight is a big factor for me. The amount of equipment you will have with you also needs to be considered.
All these are good advice. I’m 5’9 175. I do most fishing in the south Padre island Texas area. I own a ascend 10 I bought from bass pro. Start slow learn the water you are in. I’ve flipped mine once. I’m 70 yrs. I can’t think of any other place I would like to be more than fishing in my yak. I took advice from a licensed kayak guide there. Most important: if it looks sketchy...it probably is. So a big part of my great experience in kayaking has been learning about tides, currents and patience. Have fun.
Welcome Isittg8. I’m new also but a relatively seasoned yaker Spend most of my fishing time around South Padre Tex. I’ve found the Ascend 10 easy to use and stable enough for all I need. I’m an old guy ( 70) so I’m not into a lot of speed or a lot of add-ons. I like the weight also. Does the trick for me and the cost is within my budget. I’ve caught my share of fish and I can depend on it.
What they said. Not much sympathy here. Another eye roller. Just fish and good luck. By the way, a lot of us here would just like to fish again let alone try to out smart the government.
One of my favorites is down hwy 48 at the ramp there. I go to the west side of the bridge first usually at daybreak then work my way out to the channel to Brownsville area. I also like to put in at the county park and work my way out the the jetty’s. Currents are sometimes tough there. Have to pick your days for that. All good. Like you say soooo many places. Are you back in Mn now ?
Thanks and good morning to you! That’s what I’ll do today. Hope you can fish today!
Anyone heard what traveling/fishing/public access restrictions are in place there? Bait shops open ?
All the advice is good and right. I like to stay close to the shore and I try to keep my back or at least my side to the shore line at all times so I can square up quickly to the wakes when boats or jet skis get too close. Be aware at all times. Salt water kayaking is the same.
Very nice. You most certainly got what you were looking for and then some. Thanks for the pics. I’ll have to try it.
Good to hear from another Kansan ! I lived and worked in Salina. Fished Wilson lake a lot.
You are absolutely correct about Don Wes ! Thanks for the welcome. I’m 98%live shrimp also. Used some mullet and squid from time to time. Anxious to get back to it. Thanks again.
