One thing I have found that may work for you is to take a small split shot that I use when I am fly fishing ( extremely small) and attach it right above the swivel.

You can adjust the weight to your needs (heavier or lighter) and because it’s right at the swivel it doesn’t move so it casts the same way each time.

The best way like has been said above is really to use a lighter line or use a much more flexible ultralight rod.

Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun.

I personally have been fishing for over 40 years and I always take BOTH my fly rod and my spinning rod. The way I look at it is you are never to old or young to learn anything.. I suggest that you first go to a fly shop and try and find what style of rod you like to use and are comfortable using. I have several Reddington a few Eagle Claw but I have found I really like my 10’ 4wt. Orvis Clearwater for stream/river fishing for trout.. It very flexible and FOR ME very easy to cast. But when I go for steelhead I use my 10’/7 Reddington. It is like fishing with a steel pipe but it will not break no matter how big or strong the fish.
I also have found some great deals on used equipment but you need to get a rod your comfortable with.
My suggestion is try some different types of rods then go looking for a cheaper price set up . Then you can make a more educated buy.

But no matter what don’t give up. Take both and if you get frustrated with the fly grab up the spinning rod and keep fishing.

Good luck and have fun

My favorite sound and a bad guys worst is the sound of my 12 gauge pump shotgun.
I had someone break into my truck while I was camping.
I was in my tent and thank god I put my gun in the tent with me.
When I knew for sure it was a person breaking into my truck ( not a deer or bear) I just waited till it was a bit quiet then I with as much force as possible racked my 12 gauge pump shotgun and waited.

The next sounds I heard were a lot of scrambling and an OH S***! Then running footsteps away from my campsite.

I checked out my truck and then went back to sleep.

I believe the best rain gear is Helly Hansen or Grundens. I worked on Commecrial fishing boats and the oil rigs and they have lasted me the best. I take them on every fishing trip I go on.. They are extremely tough.

The last pair of grundens I bought was at Sportsman Warehouse.
I think total cost was around $140 for the bib type bottoms and the Jacket.
They carry both the HH and Grundens.

Most of the time I just use my waders for my legs and the jacket on top.

I get a size larger than I need so I have more room.

Good luck and good fishing.

I agree with the no trout fishing in L.A. BUT if you want to take a drive go up to Oxnard. It’s about an hour north of the Valley north on the 101 or 2 on the PCH. The fishing off the rocks at the Channel Island Marina in Oxnard is awesome. Really easy access clean clear water lots of stuff to do up there too. Also the Port Hueneme harbor is really good. A large ship sank against the rock years ago wall and the fish have made it a home and love it. If you go up the PCH once you get past Malibu the shore/rock fishing is also pretty good.
Anyway have fun.

I have had a lot of luck with rubber leg fly’s for trout and steelhead here in California. I use whatever color/ pattern of the creatures around my fishing hole is.

The river walk in Boulder is a great place to take the kids. It has a Long wide flat concrete path. I used to ride my bicycle along with my 7 yr old daughter along the path. Then pull over and fish. The river is right next to the path. You can see a ton of fish. She loved it.

If the weather is ok you may want to try going up to Nederland and fish the river on the way up and then the lake at the top of Boulder Canyon. Lots of fish and there is a small ski area right outside of town. Really low key no stress place. Great food in Nederland also.

If you have the time (maybe the weekend) 11 mile canyon is a great place to go in the winter. I have taken my daughter there and had a great time and is so-so on fishing.

The reservoir is ok but may be frozen over in places. The canyon is way more fun.
It is up by Lake George.
Lots of Deer,Elk,places to keep the attention of the little ones. Easy hiking trails.
Easy access to the water, Lots of trout, Great outdoor stuff to see and do for the kids.

Anyway good luck and have a great time.

It’s a little bit of a drive but try Santa Anna Creek. It’s in Ventura county. There’s a large lake close also.
Check online or on google earth for directions and look for some better locations if no fish.

Good luck.

I have several types of fly rods and I have found the Orvis Clearwater 10ft 4 weight works the best in most fresh water applications. Easy to use and flexible.

I am new to this forum but this was my experience.
When I first started out Fly fishing I bought a cheap in a package rod&reel combination and the rod was so stiff I really had a hard time using it coming from using a spinning rod lifestyle.. So I lost interest. Figured it was not for me.
Then as the other people on this site said I gave it one last try but went to the local fly shop and within 10 min the instructor had me using a more flexible rod and I have been hooked on Fly fishing ever since. I still bring my spinning rod with me but it sits in the truck more times than not..
Hope this was helpful..Just don’t give up..

Hello everyone.. please forgive me if this is not how to start chatting. My first time here.. anyway I have been Fly Fishing for the last two years up here in Fall River Mills in Northern California. This is one of the best areas I have ever fished and I just got a pack of (Fly Clips). I have found they work great and seem to hold up well and makes changing flys quick and easy. Does anyone else use them or have a comment good or bad. I have learned to listen to advice from people that have more experience than I.
Thank you for letting me have a chance to learn from you all.
