I do not believe you can effectively “save money” by fishing . Fishing is never a guarantee #1 . Therefore the days you go out and catch no keeper fish you have used the money you could other wise just bought a steak and potato on your travel / gear / bait / misc. items you will find you need while fishing . Including those store bought snacks and drinks to keep you going while your fishing .. see where I’m going with this . . It’s a hobby for a lot of people at most , for me it’s a passion. I have no care for money’s spent on going out on the water . I average $100 a day to take a trip out inshore fishing and I do it multiple times a week in summer , but yes I do score lots of variety and large size fish so I feel it does pay for it self kinda ..... lake fishing might be different ... I wouldn’t know ..but just enjoy the outdoors and supplement your diet with the extra wild fish you harvest at the least . Don’t try to “quit buying meat” you’ll starve

I’ve heard finding shallower back waters in the winter is more favorable to find big cats in the winter ... google earth your fishing location and target some areas with shallower water and some sort of structure on the edges and fish in / near those areas on the bottom with very smelly bait . Hot dogs cut in 2 inch pieces soaked in red coolaide and put some salt and garlic in the bag let sit overnight with just enough water to cover the amount of bait you cut up . Makes good bait for cats easy to hook also is smelly and attractive

J hooks can kill fish . They don’t seek fish out and kill them . Use what catches and works for you . Just make sure to follow your state guidelines when it comes to allowable tackle for targeting certain types of fish .

I am not one to ever judge someone , I stick to myself and give respect before I expect it back type of guy it’s how I was raised , I was also raised to respect my elders . However yesterday 12/5/19 @ Yankeetown marina about 8:00am I was putting my drain plug in my boat and walking back to my driver seat so I could launch my boat , when two older men in a newer model grey Toyota Tundra and a aluminum flats boat “whipped” in the lot like a bat out of hell & without waiting his turn to launch proceeds to try to turn his boat around in an already small lot that only allows 1 vehicle to properly launch at a time and “skip” me . Here’s where instant karma steps into play . He cut his truck so hard and without room to make the turn Jack-knives his trailer & bust a nice big taillight out / bent his bumper . Then as he heard the loud pop he threw it into drive and ran over the new wooden and rope fence the marina put up to save the grass . THEN had to make a series of what I would call a 20 point turn to straighten his truck out and then launched his boat . While I stood there in compete Amazement staring at him and his buddy they completely avoided all eye contact 100% . So I waited for the driver to return from parking his truck , I approached him at the ramp where I was just about to now finally launch . I explained to him in all my years fishing there I had never seen such a display Of arrogance & ignorance and that I was taught to respect my elders and pass on good etiquette as a sportsman to one another but that he made it hard to do in this situation . And by my calm demeanor and efforts to explain this and put him in check I did just that . I seen it click in his eyes that he made a dumb decision and he apologized I wished him a good day and to “catch a nice one” he proceeded to tell me I am a nice guy as he walked away . I don’t know how him and his buddy day turned out but if your ready for some good numbers check this out ( I caught 24 snook that day ranging 12-21 inches in length , 1 22 inch red , 7 underslot sea trout . And that’s karma . I did keep my red . But last time we went out we released 3 slot reds on a boat full of people just fishing for fun ! And a few keeper trout were released . Just remember take care of our environment and respect one another and we will all see the benefits of it . Happy holidays out there and tight lines !

God bless you brother ! Look for structure anywhere you can and use smaller live baits under a bobber adjusted to proper depth set and chill out and watch that cork it’ll go down ! Try minnows or small shad whatever the bait of choice is where you are . You could try deep diving square bills / hardbaits to cover medium depth water and try to get lucky that way

if you would like to try to catch a river monster . Use one for bait , get a medium heavy reel/ugly stick combo with 12 -14 pound test or stronger line and use a larger size hook with heavier type weights a couple feet above the hook and set it out where you think the water is deep and cast there and let it sink to bottom and set your pole up in a holder preferably, tighten the line up just enough to make no slack and wait . . . .
P.s loosen the drag a bit if in a holder just remember to adjust it as needed when fighting a big fish using drag on the fly while battling is important . If the fish is pulling super hard for example and you think line will break .. loosen the drag , when it’s not fighting and or tiring out tighten up a bit on the drag a reel it In ! Hope that helps I’ve been fishing 25 years

Myself , the wife and son headed out of Yankeetown Marina last Sunday morning with no expectations other than burning some fuel in the boat, well my son with a knocker rig and some live shrimp caught over 10 legal slot size ( some upper and most mid ) reds at various different locations we normally fish there . So we had a great day . Just wanted to share the story , that even a 7 year old can out fish his dad and that “you never know unless you go !” Get out there and fish , but always be a Steward Of Mother Nature and be safe
