Getting Hooks Out

I've recently started smashing Rainbows with a setup off the bottom. It's your standard, bell weight, swivel to hook and powerbait on the end.

The issue is when these guys take the bait they swallow it. I was thinking of some longer needle nose pliars, but is there a better way to get the hooks out ? sometimes they are way down inside and I'd rather cut the line and tie another hook while the bite is on - rather than mess around pulling a hook out - is there a method?

If your playing catch and release game, get some long needle nose to get further down if you need to. If your catch and kill, just cut the line and get back to fishing, you can retrieve your hook/rig later.

Go in through the gills. You'll still need a longer set of jaws on the pliers, but it's much less likely to injure the fish than trying to fight it out through the mouth. Certainly better than leaving it in.

Make sure more of the point of the hook is showing so they won’t swallow it .

Hemp stats are really good for this, they are long and skinny enough. Plus they lock so you can bite them down on your shirt or something so they are always with you.

You might try a circle hook and a forceps.

I agree with Cosmic, for smaller fish Hemostats 6-8 inches are great. Straight or curved. For Salt Water, bigger fish( I hope!) I use Long nosed Vise Grips.

I use long a pair of nose-pliers and crimp down all of the "Barbs" on the treble hooks so its extremely easy to remove and not injury the Trout...

Plus I use a Danielson Hook Disgorger by Sportsman's Warehouse... $0.69...

If your bait fishing , some ways around deeply hooking fish .
1- push bait forward of hook so hook remains exposed , this way on bite u will usually lip hook or hook outside the jaw easy release
2- bend down barbs if using baitholder hooks
3- Hemostats thru gill area dislodges hooks much easier by u must be careful so gill is not damaged ! Smaller fish this could kill them
4- use larger size light wire hooks , makes it a little harder to swallow bait
5- strike quickly this alone prevents many deeply hooked issues

When using power bait ,trout swallow it a lot. If deep. Cut the line , close to the mouth of fish. Hook will rust out, but will keep trout alive. I have caught fish with another hook in it. I easily removed most of them. I use #12 hooks and close barbs. It helps. Try different techniques till you find one that works for you.

Up size your hook and use a circle hook setup.

Circle hooks. Period, end of story. Best to pinch down the barb as well. When a fish swallows a Circle Hook, it can't "catch" on it's internals, but instead gets dragged out of it's gut, then catches the lip of the fish. J kooks kill fish. It's that simple. Cheers!

First time responder, but have been reading all the topics ,not bragging by any means but grew up a half block from the Spokane river . A lot of deep lakes here in the great northwest. I tie trout flies and agree the hemp stats are not only good for holding feathers, but getting that hook. If you catch one that needs to grow up ,try to be nice to the trout . Semper fi to all my military Bros and WMs ooh rah and I find all of you well informed or have a lot to contribute. Learned alot . Hope I can contribute. I am only 64 this January. Kris Judson
